Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – After first pitch was moved up two hours to try to miss inclement weather, the UMBC baseball team's home opener with Army has been suspended until Saturday due to rain. The two teams will pick back up in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied at three.
Army struck first, scoring one time in both the first and second innings. Sophomore Shane Vlasic shut down the Black Knights from there, limiting them to just two earned runs on four hits, over six and two-thirds innings. The lefty also struck out two batters.
The Retrievers hit back in the fourth inning with three runs, to take the lead, 3-2. Freshman Anthony Gatto (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) is two-for-two with an RBI and a run scored. He has now hit safely in each of his first three collegiate games.
Seniors Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) also drove in runs for the Retrievers.
With the inclement weather looming, Army plated a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three runs apiece.
The two squads will return tomorrow and Sunday to conclude this game as well as face off in two more regularly scheduled games.
