Baseball Drops Middle Game to Navy, 15-2

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – UMBC junior Jason Allinder (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill/Chesapeake CC) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, but the UMBC baseball team (2-8) fell in the second game of a three game home-and-home series with Navy, 15-2, Saturday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.

Navy's Johnny Schoberl (2-1) helped the Midshipmen even the series, throwing six and two-thirds innings, allowing only two runs and six hits, to pick up his second win of the year.

Sophomore Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) took the loss for UMBC after yielding ten runs on 12 hits over four innings of work.

After a scoreless first inning, Navy struck first, plating a single run in the bottom of the second and then breaking the game open with five runs in the third.  Andrew Hahn picked up the big hit for the Mids, driving in three runs with a triple to the left centerfield gap.

Navy picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to seven runs, 7-0, before UMBC could get on the board.

The Retrievers finally made their mark in the top of the fifth when sophomore D.J. Smith(Millersville, Md./Old Mill) slapped a single to right, plating senior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep).

The Midshipmen pushed right back, however, as Chris Cannon led off with a solo homerun to right center and Navy scored two more runs, pushing the lead to nine, 10-1.  Cannon led Navy on Saturday, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Navy scored five more runs in the sixth through eighth innings, while the Retrievers could only manage one more run.

UMBC and Navy wrap up the three game series tomorrow at Max Bishop Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.  The Retrievers will send sophomore righty Shane Vlasic (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) to the mound, while Navy will counter with Zach Sipe.
