Baseball Drops Pair on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The UMBC baseball team (0-2) dropped both game on the opening day of its 2012 campaign at the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday.  In the season opener against Georgetown, the Retrievers hit three homeruns, but fell, 13-6, to the Hoyas.  Just a few hours later in the night cap, UMBC lost to the host Demon Deacons, 10-2.

Against the Hoyas, UMBC showed some early season pop.  After trailing, 1-0, heading into the bottom of the second inning, junior Tom Gilchrist (Olney, Md./Sherwood/Chesapeake CC) drilled his first homerun of the year, a two run shot, over the left field fence, to give the Retrievers their first lead of the young season.

The next inning, senior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) extended UMBC's lead with a solo shot, putting the Retrievers up, 3-1.

After Georgetown scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, UMBC came right back, taking the lead on a two-run homerun by freshman Ian Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J./Rutgers Prep).

The Hoyas, however, scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to take a commanding lead, and win the opening game of the invitational.

Freshman David Superdock (Newmanstown, Pa./ELCO) took the loss for UMBC, yielding four earned runs in an inning and two-thirds of work, and is now 0-1.

Playing against host Wake Forest in their second game of the day, the Retrievers gave up eight runs in the first four innings, and could not recover.

Senior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington)was charged with the loss after giving up seven earned in three and one-thirds innings.

Himmelstein hit his second homerun of the day, this time to right field, in the losing effort for the Retrievers.

UMBC returns to the diamond for the second day of the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday when the Retrievers once again take on Georgetown.  First pitch between the Retrievers and Hoyas is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Wake Forest Baseball Park
