BALTIMORE- UMBC rallied late to tie American at the end of regulation in the first overtime period, but fell, 73-70, to the Eagles in double overtime.

Senior guard Ryan Cook (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) led all scorers with 24 points and nearly won the game in regulation, but his 3-pointer from the top of the key went in-and-out with eight seconds remaining.

Junior posts Chase Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) andBrett Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) each posted double-doubles. Plummer scored 16 points and garnered 10 rebounds, while Roseboro recorded 12 of each.

UMBC missed crucial free throws in the extra sessions. Plummer hit one-of-two with 43 seconds to play in the first overtime period and tied the contest at 67-all. The Retrievers forced a pair of errant Eagle shots in the final possession of the first extra frame.

Plummer hit a trey to give the Retrievers a 70-69 lead early in the second overtime period, But after Roseboro rejected an Eagle shot on the next possession, Plummer was fouled and had the opportunity to extend the lead. But he missed two free throws and American sophomore guard John Schoof converted a pair on the other end on American's next possession.

UMBC (2-7) failed to score on their final six possessions- the first five opportunities could have given the hosts the lead. Trailing 71-70, Cook was whistled for a player control foul with 13 seconds remaining, and Schoof converted another two free throws three seconds later.

Freshman Malik Garner's (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) attempt to tie the game on a 3-pointer with three seconds to go hit the back iron and American corralled the rebound to ice the victory.

The Retrievers have now lost eight consecutive overtime games vs. non-conference competition dating back to a win over Quinnipiac in the 2001-02 season. It is the second home extra-time loss of the young season, as UMBC fell, 83-82, to Central Connecticut State on Nov. 20. UMBC is 7-3 in ten overtime games vs. America East competition.

Schoof and senior guard Daniel Munoz led American (4-5) with 19 points apiece.

American led 32-24 at the half, but UMBC outscored the Eagles, 26-14 in the first eleven minutes of the second half to take a 50-46 lead. The visitors responded with an 8-0 surge and maintained a four-point advantage with less than four minutes to play. But Plummer hit a driving layup and two free throws to knot the score at 60-all with 2:26 remaining.

The RAC erupted as UMBC got another stop, and Roseboro converted an alley-oop dunk to put the Retrievers ahead, 62-60, with 1:28 to play. The teams exchanged empty possessions before Munoz hit a tough driving bank shot with 32 ticks to go and the game would head to overtime.

The two teams were nearly even statistically, as both hit 26 field goals, with UMBC at 44.1 percent and America at 41.9 percent from the field. The Eagles were 10-of-25 from beyond the arc, while the Retrievers were 8-of-24. American hit 11-of-15 free throws for the game, including 6-of-8 in the final 10 minutes, while UMBC was 10-of-16 overall. However, three of the six misses occurred in extra time.

UMBC returns to action on Sun., Dec. 9, when they travel to Norfolk State to take on a 2012 NCAA Tournament squad.
