Annapolis- The UMBC men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 second
half deficit and defeated a strong Navy side, 2-1, at the Glenn
Warner Soccer Facility.
The Retrievers won for the second time in four days and improved
to 7-4-4 on the season, while Navy slipped to 5-4-3.
After a scoreless first half, UMBC carried the play early in the
second stanza, but it was the Mids that struck first when Thomas
Shiiba scored in the 58th minute.
But UMBC kept the pressure on and tied the game just over six
minutes later. Sophomore Mamadou
Kansaye (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) struck a corner
kick from the right side and junior forward Pete Caringi
III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) headed it home for his
ninth goal of the season and fifth in the last three contests.
The Retrievers grabbed the lead with only 8:27 remaining in
regulation. Kansaye served the ball into the box where it went off
a Navy defender and past netminder Aaron Dupere and into the cage.
The goal was credited as an own goal.
The Mids had a pair of corner kicks in the final minute, but
could not score the tying goal and UMBC snapped a five-game winless
streak vs. Navy.
The victory was UMBC's first since a 5-2 victory in 1998.
UMBC outshot Navy, 13-9, and had 10 corners to 3 for the
Midshipmen. Retriever junior goalkeeper Phil
Saunders (Perry Hall ,Md./Perry Hall) made one save to get
credit for the victory, while Dupere had to come up with six for
the hosts.
UMBC senior midfielder Milo Kapor (Toronto, Ont./Emily
Carr) recorded seven of UMBC's 13 shots and put five on goal.
UMBC returns to league action on Fri., Oct. 19 when they travel
