West Hartford, Conn. – The UMBC men's lacrosse team
fell at Hartford, 14-11, in the America East Championship semifinal
contest at Al-Marzook Field.
UMBC (6-7) junior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River,
N.Y) led the Retrievers, scoring a career-high four goals. Linemate
sophomore attackman Joe Lustgarten (Wading River, N.Y.)
also posted career bests, with three goals and a helper.
UMBC jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the 5:27 mark of the first
quarter. But Hartford (10-6) would respond with a 6-0 run a
10-minute span bridging the first and second quarters and grabbed a
7-4 advantage with 8:03 to play in the first half.
The Retrievers replied as Grimm scored his second and third
goals of the game at the 6:33 and 4:16 marks of the second quarter
and UMBC went into halftime trailing by only 7-6.
The two squads exchanged goals to open the third quarter and
UMBC had a chance to tie with a 1:00 man-up situation at the 6:37
mark of the period. But the Retrievers could not connect and the
Hawks scored three times in a span of 2:47 bridging the third and
fourth quarters an led, 11-7, 19 seconds into the fourth
quarter.
UMBC could not cut the deficit inside of three goals the rest of
the way.
Retriever sophomore attackman Scott Jones (Port
Coquitlam, B.C.) scored a goal and added two assists, while
sophomore long-stick midfielder Ethan Murphy (West
Seneca, N.Y.) posted a goal and added a helper.
Hartford outshot UMBC, 38-36, and won 19 of 29 draws. The
Retrievers scored only once on five extra-man opportunities.
Hartford's Ryan Compitello, Jared Franze, and Carter
Bender scored three goals apiece. The Hawks advance to face host
Stony Brook in the title game on Sunday.
