BALTIMORE—Senior
Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) pitched a 100-pitch complete game as the UMBC baseball won the final game of a three-game set with Longwood, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Retrievers improve to 4-16, while the Lancers fall to 21-11.
Drewyer, who pitched a complete-game win against Chicago State earlier in the year, allowed one run while scattering eight hits with five strikeouts. The senior induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
In the bottom of the first, junior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) singled before advancing to second on a senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) walk. Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) doubled to right-center field to score Schickner and redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) singled to score Conlon.
Himmelstein came around to score on a RBI groundout by junior Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and Ream scored on a single by freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) to give the Retrievers a 4-0 lead.
UMBC scored a two-out two-run rally in the fourth when freshman Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) and Schickner hit back-to-back doubles. After a walk, Himmelstein drove in Schickner with a single up the middle.
Longwood starter Troy Dickman (2-1) lasted through just the first inning, allowing four runs.
The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they play at Georgetown at 3 p.m.
