Baseball Drops Heartbreaker to Binghamton, 5-4, Sunday

BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team scored four runs in the fourth, but Binghamton rallied late and scored two runs in the ninth inning to win, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Baseball Factory Field. With the loss, the Retrievers fell to 4-20 (0-3 America East), while the Bearcats improved to 10-15 (3-0).

Freshman Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) doubled to right field to lead off the fourth. After a freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) walk, Kean beat the throw to third base on a junior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) bunt to load the bases.

Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) singled to score Kean and McCabe and redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) followed with a chopper over the first base bag to score Schickner and Himmelstein. Ream came home to score on a grounder by senior Dustin Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil College).

Senior Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) pitched his third complete game of the season, allowing five runs with four strikeouts. He did issue a walk and now has only two walks in 57.1 innings of work this season.

Binghamton starter Jay Lynch (2-4) settled down after the fourth, finishing with four strikeouts in eight innings of work. Zach Juliano pitched a perfect ninth to earn his second save.

Bearcat Mike Thompson's RBI double tied the game in the ninth, while Daniel Nevares' single that followed scored Thompson for the go-ahead run.

The Retrievers return to action Tuesday evening against George Mason at 6 p.m. Free hot dogs, chips and soda will be available to all fans in attendance to mark the start of mid-week evening baseball at Baseball Factory Field for the 2011 season.
