Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - The UMBC baseball team used two six-run innings to extend their winning streak to three, defeating North Dakota State 16-10, Thursday in Lakeland, Fla. With the win, the Retrievers improve to 3-6 on the season, while the Bison fall to 5-8.
Freshman Aaron Brill (Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) led off the third with a walk and moved over to third on a sophomore Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) double. After junior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) singled to score Brill. The Retrievers would score on the next five plays, including RBI hits by juniors Rick Phillips(Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison).
After the Bison scored two in the top of the fourth, UMBC stretched the lead to 7-5 on a sophomore Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) RBI single that scored Medairy.
Sophomore Mike Lafferty (Annapolis, Md./Mount St. Joseph/Marietta College) singled in Conlon and Schickner in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 9-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lafferty added a two-run triple and Klukowicz followed with a bomb to right field as the Retrievers put up a six spot for the second time in the game. Both Lafferty and Klukowicz finished with four RBI on the day.
Senior starter Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (1-2) went six-plus innings, scattering four earned runs, for his first win of the season. Junior Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) got the final nine outs for his first save.
North Dakota State starter Ben Bruggeman (0-1) lasted two-plus innings, striking out two.
Phillips extended his multi-hit game streak to four with two singles.
The Retrievers return to action Friday when they face Indiana at 3 p.m.
