Retriever Baseball Drops Two to Binghamton, 10-0 and 9-3, Saturday Afternoon

BALTIMORE--The UMBC baseball team dropped two games at home to Binghamton, 10-0 and 9-3, Saturday afternoon. With the losses, the Retrievers fall to 9-30 on the season and 4-14 in America East play, while the Bearcats improved to 23-15 overall and 10-2 in conference action.
 
Senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) led off the game for the Retrievers with his third home run of the season, a deep shot to left. After the Bearcats took a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the third, senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) hit the left-center field fence score freshman Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) and senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) to tie the game. Binghamton added one run in the seventh and eighth and four in the ninth to win the game, 9-3.
 
Sophomore starter Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) (2-4) pitched a solid seven innings, allowing four runs with three strikeouts, but took the loss. Binghamton starter Murphy Smith (7-1) stuck out 13 in seven innings of work to earn the win.
 
In the first game, the Bearcats scored five runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 10-0 victory. UMBC junior starter Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (1-9) allowed 10 runs, seven earned, with four strikeouts in his fourth complete game of the year, but took the loss. Binghamton starter Jeff Dennis (4-3) pitched a complete game two-hitter while striking out five for the win.
 
The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow at noon for a doubleheader. In between the games, there will be a small ceremony to honor UMBC's seven seniors playing in their final home America East series.
