UMBC Baseball Falls to Maine, 11-5 and 5-4, Sunday

ORONO, Maine--Sophomore Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) hit his first career grand slam in the second game, but the UMBC baseball team was defeated by Maine, 11-5 and 5-4, Sunday in Orono, Maine. With the losses, the Retrievers drop to 5-26 on the season and 1-11 in America East action, while the Black Bears improve to 24-13 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
 
After the Black Bears scored four runs against UMBC freshman starter Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington), senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) singled to lead off the eighth inning. Senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) followed with a single up the middle and fellow senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) walked to load the bases before Phillips cleared the bases with his first home run of the season and third in his Retriever career to tie the game at four.
 
Jarrett Lukas led off the bottom of the eighth with a homer to left off sophomore Travis Pearson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) (1-3), who only allowed one run in five innings of relief. Maine starter Matt Jebb (6-1) earned the win, striking out four in eight innings of work. Keith Bilodeau pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
 
In the first game, freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) hit his first home run as a Retriever, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, but the Black Bears used four-multi run innings to win 11-5. With the long ball, Lamborn doubled his RBI tally on the season to six.
 
Retz, who went 2-for-3, now has multiple hits in six out of the last seven games. Kevin McAvoy led the Black Bears, going 4-for-4 with four RBI.
 
UMBC junior starter Kevin Clark (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Catonsville C.C.) dropped to 2-2 on the season, allowing six runs in five innings, while Maine starter Pat Quinn earned the win, striking out seven in 5 and 2/3 innings.
 
The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Georgetown at 7 p.m. UMBC returns home on Wednesday against George Washington at 7 p.m. An audio webcast of the game will be broadcast on taped delay at Herb FM on live365.com.
