Second-Half Rally Fuels Retrievers to 62-56 Victory at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y.—Senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, leading the UMBC women's basketball team (6-6) to a come-from-behind 62-56 victory over Fordham (6-7) on the second day of the Fordham Holiday Classic at the Rams' Rose Hill Gym.

Cassidy moved into second place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,391 career points, surpassing both Missy Quille and Angel Webb. She averaged 22.5 points and shot 48.3 percent in two games at the Fordham Holiday Classic.

Down 31-18 at halftime, the Retrievers opened the second stanza with a 17-2 run in the first six minutes to completely erase their 13-point deficit. Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) scored eight points during that stretch, including the game-tying 3-pointer and a layup that gave UMBC a 35-33 lead.

Fordham guard Kyara Weekes quickly put the Rams back on top with a 3-pointer, but UMBC junior forward Meghan Colabella (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) responded with a triple of her own.

The score was tied five times over the next five minutes before a 3-pointer by Cassidy gave the Retrievers the lead for good, 53-50, with 3:25 remaining, sparking a 7-0 UMBC run.

A jumper by Weekes and a triple by guard Becky Peters brought the Rams to within three points, 58-55, with 1:05 left, but Kurowski and sophomore forward Erin Brown (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) each knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the victory.

The Retrievers shot 51.7 percent in the second half and finished at 40.4 percent for the game. Kurowski was the only other Retriever in double figures, as she scored all of her 12 points in the second half to go along with a team-best seven rebounds.

Weekes led the Rams with 16 points, while forward Randall Hurst recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 3, when they conclude their six-game road trip at Virginia Tech.
