Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC women's basketball team sweeten Valentines Day on Saturday night at RAC Arena with a 61-51 win over Northeastern. The Retrievers (2-19, 2-10 AE) snapped a three game slide by shooting 75.0 percent (12-of-16) in the second half as Maria Brown (Frederick, Md./Frederick) tallied a game-high 17 points in the win over the Huskies (11-10, 5-7 AE).
UMBC trailed by as many as seven in the first half as NU took a 23-19 lead into the break. In the second half the Retrievers got hot from the field going on a 15-3 run after trailing 28-25 with 17:52 in the second period.
The Huskies retaliated by climbing back in the game and taking a four-point lead at 46-42 with 6:12 remaining on a Marline Zwarich jumper. The Retrievers took over down the stretch allowing the Huskies a mere five points in the remaining six minutes of the game as UMBC finished with a 19-5 run, going 3-of-3 from the field and making 13-of-16 free throws.
In addition to Brown's 17 points, Anastasia Goncharova (Moscow, Russia/The Newport School) scored 13, Sharrie Rohde (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) tallied 11 and Tyecia Powell (Baltimore, Md./Western) added 10 to put four players in double-digits.
UMBC was 4-of-6 from outside the arc and 50 percent (5-of-10) from three-point range in the game shooting season low 10 treys. UMBC finished the game at 61.8 percent from the field (21-of-34) while the Huskies were 18-of-52 for 34.6 percent.
Melissa Kowalski for the Huskies scored 14 points and hit 4-of-14 treys including her second one that made her the AE career-leader in treys. She has 222 for her career.
