Retrievers Rack Up Qualifiers on Day One of Championships

LOWELL, Mass. - Enazajah Young and Anna Creel each won their preliminary events on day one of the America East Championships to lead UMBC. 

Young, continuing a dominant year, raced to first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.47 seconds. She also qualified seventh in the 100 with a time of 12.05. 

Creel led a group of four Retrievers to qualify in the 400, clocking a time of 56.50 seconds. Dalyce Schmidt qualified second (56.58), Leanne McDonald qualified third (56.81), and Ruth Ayuk-Takor qualified seventh (57.76). 

Charliana Dacosta took second in the 100 to qualify for the finals with a time of 11.93, while Lily Bandy qualified fifth with a time of 12.03. Bandy also qualified fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.92 seconds. 

Lilly Norcross moved into seventh all-time on the UMBC performance list in the 800 with a time of 2:12.59, qualifying second. Katie Schwaner finished third with a time of 2:14.17 to qualify for the final. 

Marie Abongwa started the scoring for UMBC, taking fourth in the hammer throw with a 52.66-meter throw. Emily Mitroka grabbed points for UMBC in the steeplechase with a sixth-place finish, moving into fourth on UMBC's all-time list with a time of 11:13.05. Her sister, Elizabeth Mitroka, moved into eighth all-time on UMBC's list with a time of 11:31.61 to place 12th. 

Lydia Nelson and Katelyn Deal qualified for the 1,500, placing ninth and 11th, respectively. 

UMBC is in seventh after day one with eight points.
