UMBC Baseball Concludes 2026 Mid-Week Slate on Tuesday at Towson

The UMBC Baseball team will play its final non-conference and mid-week contest of the season as it makes the short trip to Towson on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game.

The two teams last met three weeks ago at Alumni Field as the Dawgs rallied from a late multi-run deficit to win via walk-off as it defeated the Tigers, 6-5, in 11 innings on Tuesday night.

Ehi Okojie complete the comeback from down 5-1 in the eighth when he smacked a two-strike, two-out single off the wall in left center to score Anthony Mascuilli from third and give the Dawgs the win.

Mascuilli was the lone Retriever with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored.

Towson took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but UMBC (19-16) got on the board when Mascuilli walked on four pitches to start the inning, stole second and then scored on an error. It would remain 4-1 until the seventh when the Tigers pushed another run across to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Retriever bats came alive in the bottom of the eighth, however, as Mascuilli ripped a leadoff double and scored on a Danny Wyatt one-out single. Okojie then walked and both he and Wyatt would score on a Derek Paris double to trim the deficit to 5-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dylan Melton and Mascuilli drew back-to-back walks with one out, and then both moved up on a wild pitch before Melton scored on a Danny Orr sacrifice fly to tie the game. Neither team could score in the tenth, and UMBC won it in the eleventh when Mascuilli singled with one out, moved to second on a walk to Orr, advanced to third on a Wyatt flyout and then scored on Okojie's hit.

Sergio Droz was tremendous in relief in picking up his first career win, as he retired the final seven batters he faced, striking out three.

Last time, out the Retrievers were denied a series sweep at Bryant as the host scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to win, 4-3 via walk-off.

The Bulldogs led the game, 2-0, until the seventh inning when Jessiah Carpenter had a bases loaded walk to put UMBC on the board. Melton followed it up with a single up the middle to score Brooks Henderson and Paris to take a 3-2 lead. Bryant would walk it off in the bottom of the ninth to avoid being swept.

Orr had two hits and Mascuilli also had a hit for the Retrievers. Droz threw six innings with five strikeouts and two earned runs. Bennett Speicher came in relief for Droz and recorded three strikeouts with one earned run.

Scouting Towson:

The Tigers dropped the rubber game of a three game series at William & Mary on Sunday.

William & Mary (21-28, 12-15 CAA) and Towson (20-30, 8-19 CAA) traded the lead for much of the early going in Sunday's series finale. That was before the Tribe scored four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to reclaim the lead for the final time in their 14-6 win.
  • Towson starter Liam Diehl (1-7) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched. Diehl struck out six and walked two batters faced.
  • William & Mary pitcher Connor Jernigan (1-4) earned the win after allowing one unearned run on one hit and four walks in 3.0 innings pitched. Jernigan struck out two batters faced.
