  • The Retrievers are competing in their 58th season as well as their 40th season of D1 hoops in Baltimore.
  • UMBC has a record of 684-958 (.414) all-time.
  • The Retrievers are 485-685 (.412) at the DI level.
  • UMBC is off to their best start in conference play since the 2017-2018 championship season. The Retrievers finished 12-4 that year.
  • The Retrievers own the highest overall winning percentage in the America East (.652).
  • Head Coach Jim Ferry recorded his 400th career win on Thursday at Maine. He is the first coach in program history to reach that mark. A win on Saturday would even his mark at UMBC at 76-76.
  • The Retrievers are are 6-6 on the road this season.
  • UMBC is 4-1 in games decided by three points or less this season.
  • The Dawgs are 6-6 in games decided by single figures.
  • UMBC is 4th in the country in fewest fouls allowed per game (13.6).

  • Armstrong is 3rd in the conference in 3-point shooting accuracy (.416, 29th in NCAA) and is first in 3's per game (2.9, 51st in NCAA). He drilled his 200th career triple at Bryant on Jan. 15. He needs 30 points to reach 1,000.
  • Armstrong Jr. made his first 22 free throw attempts in conference play before missing two straight in the 2nd half at Vermont.
  • Junior guard Ace Valentine leads the conference with a 3.1 assist/turnover ratio (29th NCAA). He recorded his 250th career assist at Bryant on Jan. 15.
  • Graduate student forward Josh Odunowo, a 59 percent career foul shooter, has gone 22-for-25 (88 percent) from the foul line over the last five contests.
 LAST TIME OUT - UMBC DOMINATES MAINE; FERRY RECORDS WIN #400
  • UMBC provided Retrievers' head coach Jim Ferry with his 400th career victory after a dominant, 78-62, America East victory against the Maine Black Bears on Thursday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. UMBC and NJIT are still tied in the loss column with only two defeats in the conference. The Dawgs are off to their best start in the league since the 2017-2018 championship season.
  • Junior guard Ace Valentine scored 16 points (8-for-11 shooting) and grabbed eight rebounds to lead four Retrievers in double-figures in points. Sophomore forward Caden Diggs came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting in just 22 minutes. Graduate student forward Josh Odunowo recorded 12 points and eight rebounds while junior forward Jose Roberto Tanchyn added 11 points. Graduate student guard DJ Armstrong Jr. and freshman forward Riley Jacobs contributed nine points apiece.
  • The Retrievers, who improve to 15-8 (8-2 AE), played a tremendous game on the defensive end, holding Maine (6-20, 4-7 AE) to just 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the floor.
  • UMBC struggled from behind the arc, making only 3-of-17 attempts, but still finished with a solid 45.2 percent field goal percentage and were a terrific 19-for-22 (86.4 percent) from the free throw stripe.
  • The Retrievers dominated the boards as they held a 43-29 advantage and won the battle of the paint, outscoring the hosts by a 42-24 margin.
  • UMBC led 37-24 at halftime despite falling behind 9-4 at the first media timeout. Valentine, who is fifth in the league in field goal percentage in conference games, put the visitors ahead for good, 12-11, with a reverse layup at the 12:06 mark.  The lead grew to 24-13 with 7:02 left, completing a 20-4 run that turned the game.
  • The Retrievers continued to apply the pressure in the second half as they built a 43-26 edge after Valentine scored UMBC's first six points of the stanza. Maine closed within 12, 43-31, with 16:32 remaining, but UMBC went on an 11-2 burst to take a commanding 54-33 lead with 12:42 left. UMBC led by as many as 26 points with 6:19 left in the contest.
  • TJ Biel paced the Black Bears with 23 points and six boards.
  • The Retrievers, winners of three straight, broke a three-game road losing streak against Maine and swept the season series.
  • Ferry, now in his fifth season in Baltimore, is the first coach in program history to win 400 career games.
 SERIES HISTORY WITH UNH
  • UMBC and UNH are even at 24-24
  • The Retrievers are 8-15 all-time in Durham.
  • UNH has won five of the last eight meetings overall, including a pair of tight contests last season. The Wildcats pulled out a 79-76 decision in Baltimore and recorded a 79-78 comeback win in Durham.
  • The Retrievers got payback when they delivered a comeback win this past January in Baltimore. Graduate student guard DJ Armstrong Jr. calmly sank two free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining to give the Dawgs a 75-74 come-from-behind victory.
  • Armstrong Jr., who had already made two game-winning shots earlier this season, paced the Retrievers with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.  Junior guard Jah'Likai King contributed 15 points, junior guard Ace Valentine (12 points, four assists), and sophomore Caden Diggs contributed 10 points.
  • UMBC was down by as many as 11 points in the second half after it trailed 39-30 at intermission. Belal El Shakery recorded a game-high 18 points and 13 boards for UNH.
 ABOUT  UNH
  • Junior guard KiJan Robinson scored a team-high 16 points but the University of New Hampshire was defeated 76-70 by NJIT at Lundholm Gym on Thursday night.
  • Junior guard Comeh Emuobor finished with 15 points and six rebounds while both junior forward Belal El Shakery and freshman guard Tyler Bike netted 10 points. Bike also led the Wildcats with three assists and sophomore forward John Squire pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Robinson is 17th in the league in scoring at 11.8 ppg while El Shakery stands 20th at 10.7 ppg.
  • El Shakery leads the circuit with 7.8 rebounds per game.
  • UNH is 2nd in the league with 8.0 treys per game.
  • The Wildcats are 2nd in the league with 35.7 combined rebounds per game.
 THANKS FOR THE CHARITY
  • The Retrievers have outscored their nine America East opponents by a combined total of 168-93 from the free throw line. (7.5 more makes per game). 
  • UMBC is shooting a league-best .800 percent in the AE while its foes are at a league-worst .604 percent).
  • UMBC is 2nd overall (.742) from the charity stripe in the AE this season.
 PLAY THAT HIT AGAIN MR. DJ
  • DJ Armstrong's trey against Morgan State (11/11) was the first time UMBC hit a game-winner in the final five seconds since Craig Beaudion II. (11/20/22 vs. Central Conn.).
  • Armstrong Jr. followed that up with a buzzer-beater to defeat Wagner in overtime on Nov. 16.
  • Armstrong Jr. was named the America East Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 17.
  • Armstrong Jr. was featured on #SCTop10 twice. Teammate Jah'Likai King also made the list after his crossover move and hoop against Penn State York.
  • He also came up clutch by hitting two free thows in a one-and-one situation with 0.9 on the clock in the 75-74 win over UNH (1/10).
  • DJ also enjoyed a career game at Coppin State with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting. He drilled a career-best eight treys in 14 tries.
  • Armstrong Jr. is 11th in the America East in scoring (13.5 ppg.) and is 1st in 3s per game (2.9). He's also third on the the circuit in 3-point field goal percentage (.416). He's swished at least two treys in 19-of-23 contests this season.
 THE KING OF BALTIMORE
  • Jah'Likai King went over the 1,000 mark for his career at GW on November 18.  King scored 934 points in his first two seasons at New Haven (DII) before coming to Baltimore this season.
  • King was named AE Player of the Week on December 8. The Newburg, New York native averaged 19.5 points while shooting an impressive 54% from the field during two road games against Georgetown and Bucknell.
  • King started the week by scoring 19 points in a loss to Georgetown on Wednesday and followed it up with 20 points in a victory over Bucknell on Saturday. After trailing 26-25 at halftime against the Bison, UMBC opened the second half with a 14-6 run, establishing their largest lead of the game at 39-32 with 14:11 remaining. King contributed eight points during this crucial stretch.
  • Currently, King leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.5 points per game, ranking 8th in the league. He is also 34th in the league in rebounding, averaging 3.7 caroms per game and is 18th in steals (1.0). Additionally, King is 4th in free throw percentage at .800.
  • King recorded his 300th career rebound at Vermont.
ACE IN THE HOLE
  • Guard Ace Valentine continues to play a key role on both ends of the floor.
  • Valentine leads the conference and is 25th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (3.1) and is third in the AE in assists per game (4.0).
  • The junior has shot the ball well from behind the arc going 26-for-68 (.384) and is 92-for-179 overall (.514, 5th in the AE)
  • Valentine dished his 250th career assist in the loss to Bryant on Jan. 15.
  • Ace has reached double-figures in scoring in nine of the last 12 contests and is averaging 12.6 ppg. during the stretch.
  • He is just one point shy of 700 for his career.
 CAN YOU DIG IT?
  • Sophomore forward Caden Diggs erupted for a career-high 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting in 24 minutes off the bench against Buffalo. Diggs also knocked down a career-best three 3-pointers.
  • Diggs recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds earlier in the season against Wagner.
  • Diggs has reached double-figures in scoring in eight of ten AE contests and is averaging 11.1 ppg. during the stretch. The Old Dominion transfer is also 42-for-81 (.519) from the floor, including 8-of-23 (.345) from distance.
  • Diggs is 7th in the league in field goal percentage in conference play (.519)
TANCHYN GAINING STEAM
  • Junior forward Jose Tanchyn has started seven of the last eight games, his first seven as a Retriever.
  • Tanchyn is 8th on the circuit with 6.1 rpg. in conference play.
  • He recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 boards in the home victory against Binghamton on Feb. 5.
  • Tanchyn has recorded double-figures in rebounds in three of his last five contests.
  • He's averaging 8.4 ppg. and 6.1 rpg. in conference play.
A PROGRAM ON THR RISE
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 173-158 (.517) over the past ten seasons. They are 90--82 (516) in AE Play.
  • UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program-high.
  • UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
  • Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (formerly the UMBC Event Center) officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
  • The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
 COACH FERRY
  • Jim Ferry is in his 26th season as a collegiate head coach and his fifth at UMBC.
  • Ferry owns a 75-76 record in Baltimore.
  • Ferry picked up his 400th career win against Maine on Thursday evening.
  • Ferry led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22.
  • Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, Ferry served in 2020-21 as the interim head coach at Penn State. He led the Nittany Lions to an 11-14 overall mark and a 7-12 Big Ten record that included wins over NCAA Tournament  teams No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech , Rutgers, and Maryland (twice).
  • Ferry spent 10 seasons as head coach at LIU Brooklyn, guiding the program to unprecedented levels of success. He led the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference regular-season titles and tournament championships in 2011 and 2012, including their first NCAA Championship appearance in 14 years.
