Towson, Md. -- The UMBC Swimming & Diving team completed its final action before America East Championships with a successful day at the Tiger Winter Open at Towson on Saturday.
In the last competition of the regular season the Retrievers saw several season best individual efforts and nine lifetime bests. The America East Championships are at VMI later this month.
"This was an excellent way to wrap up the dual meet season as we prepare for America East," said head coach
Matt Donovan."Each team member got in a few more reps off the blocks and the boards that will prove very important later this month. The coaches really like where the team is right now and we are confident that we will be at our best in Virginia come February 19."
The Men's 200 Free Relay team of
Boris Milev,
Oliver Gassmann,
Ryan Harding and
Sean Neils won in a time of 1:23.92, which was immediately followed by
Breanna Smith cruising to a victory in the 400 IM (4:35.15).
Bruna de Padua then won the 200 Free in 1:52.47 before Neils winning the 100 Back in 51.37. Harding lowered his previous best 100 Breast time by 8.55 seconds in a second place finish (59.01), and a few events later, Milev took the top spot in the 100 Free in 46.91.
Christian Castro won the Men's 1650 by improving his seed time over 16 seconds to finish in 16:26.39, and then
Elze Bielskute (2:24.65) and
Hailey Weigand (2:26.87) took gold and silver in the 200 Breaststroke.Â
Nicol Davanzo was the final UMBC winner of the day when she topped the podium in the 100 Fly in a time of 56.25.
The America East Championships will be hosted by VMI and begin on February 19.
