Swimming & Diving Hosts VMI and Howard on Saturday

UMBC Entries/Order of Events

The UMBC Swimming & Diving program returns to the pool this weekend when it hosts VMI and Howard on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its annual Professor Recognition Tri-Meet.

Last time out, Alice Marini and Aidan O'Callaghan completed their excellent weekends by being named the Women's Swimmer and Male Diver of the Meet, respectively, on Sunday night as the UMBC Swimming & Diving program wrapped up competition at Loyola's Thomas Murphy Invitational.

Marini completed the sweep of all three individual events she raced in when she won the 200 back in 2:00.00. O'Callaghan once again went from final qualifier to podium as he improved his prelim score by 65 points in the 3 meter to take third. Combined with his victory in the 1 meter on Saturday, he secured 67 points, the most of any diver, and was named Diver of the meet.

UMBC took spots 2-5 in the 3 meter, as Kaleb Cave took second for the second straight day, finishing with a score of 287.25, and he was followed by O'Callaghan, Anders Logas and Grant Moore.

In the 1 meter dive for the women, Alicia Buteau took second with a score of 237.20, Ember Stennett placed fourth and Isabella Evers finished seventh.

Erma Duratovic won the Women's 100 free in a time of 51.49, while Claire Oettinger took third in 51.71. In the Men's 100 free, Matthew So took second in 44.64 (the winner had a meet record 44.00).

Ula Parrill (2:22.80) and Shannyn Lambert (2:22.83) finished second and third in 200 breststroke, while James Tao and Matthew Johnson took the top two spots in the B final of the event on the Men's side. Nick Zaharescu then won the B final of the 200 fly.

The meet closed with a strong showing from both squads in the 400 free relay as the Women's quartet of Duratovic, Oettinger, Bruna de Padua and Evie Grim improved their seed time by nearly nine seconds in a third place finish (3:27.81). The Men took second as So, Stefano Perez, Braden Weise and Sean Neils finished in 3:00.23.

Scouting Howard:

Howard men's swimming & diving team put together an all-around performance Friday night, earning a decisive 146–80 victory over American University in Burr Natatorium. The Bison claimed eight event wins, highlighted by relay wins and individual breakthroughs across the board.

Howard set the tone early with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as Howard's A relay team consisting of Kaleb James (Durham, N.C.), Mark Brown (Greensboro, N.C.), Taj Benton (Baltimore, Md.), and Mason Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) clocked a winning time of 1:32.84. HU's B relay team of Darien Williams (Philadelphia), Ayrton Moncur (Nassau, Bahamas), Eltonte Leonard (Kingston, Jamaica), and Daren Rodgers (Chicago, Ill.) followed closely in third (1:36.94).

In the 1000-yard freestyle, Jack Barr (Nassau, Bahamas) posted a new season-best time of 10:21.36 to place second, shaving nearly a second off his previous mark (10:22.22). Ty Triche (Humble, Texas) finished third in 10:31.05 to add early points.

Benton took first in the 50 free (21.62), followed by Ibrahima Diouf (Arlington, Va.) in third.

Green's first appearance in the 100 fly this season made it look easy as he took first in 49.28. Moncur followed in second (52.33) for a 1–2 Bison finish. James added another win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.74. Brown continued Howard's roll with a victory in the 100 breast (58.60), while Moncur took second.

Howard capped the night with a dominant performance in the 200 free relay, as Benton, James, Diouf, and Green powered to a first-place finish in 1:25.51, with the quartet of Stewart, Triche, Leonard, and Rodgers taking third.
