Baseball Opens 2024 Home Slate This Weekend Against Rider and Monmouth

The UMBC Baseball team will play at home for the first time in 2024, when it welcomes Rider and Monmouth to Alumni Field this weekend.

The Retrievers will play Rider on Friday, March 1st, at 3 PM, followed by a doubleheader against Monmouth on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. 

All three contests will be broadcast on AmericaEast.TV.

Last time out, UMBC dropped a, 6-5, 12-inning marathon on Tuesday evening to host George Washington.
Logan Wiley made his first career start and struck out three while allowing just three hits and one in 4.2 innings Freshman Jesiah Carpenter, Luke Trythall and Dawson Baracani all had two-hit games for the Retrievers. Trythall leads the team with a .333 average and three RBI.

After a stellar Retriever debut, graduate student
Samuel Downs was named the America East Pitcher of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday morning. Downs held the explosive Santa Clara offense in check, shutting the Broncos out over five strong innings, while striking out three and allowing just four hits.

Probable Starters:
Friday:  PJ Craig (0-2, 9.35 ERA) vs Luke Johnson (0-1, 9.00 ERA)
Sunday (G1):  Alec Couture (0-1, 3.38 ERA) vs Jayden Shertel (0-1, 4.50 ERA)
Sunday (G2): Kevin Opanel (0-1, 7.88 ERA) vs Samuel Downs (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Scouting Rider:
  • The Broncs, who went 36-21 and 14-7 in the MAAC en route to winning the MAAC Tournament and earning an NCAA Tournament berth in 2023, are currently 0-6. 
  • Rider opened the season by being swept at No.11 East Carolina, before being swept in a tight three-game series at East Tennessee State last weekend
  • Kyle Neri leads the offense with a .250 average and a pair of homers and two RBI
  • Christian Aiello has made a pair of solid starts for the Bronce, allowing just four earned runs in 10.0 innings of work (3.60 ERA)
  • Rider leads the all-time series, 7-4, but the teams have not met since 1992.
  • The Broncs have won three straight in the series
 Scouting Monmouth: 
  • The Hawks, who went 16-30 and 6-22 in the CAA last season, are currently 1-6. 
  • Monmouth started the season against Penn State and Army in Cary, N.C.
  • They dropped a pair of one run heartbreakers to each team, before blowing out PSU, 10-3.
  • The Hawks then dropped the weekend finale to Army and were swept in a very tight series at Mercer last weekend
  • Harry Padden leads the offense with a .455 batting average and six RBI
  • Alec Couture has made a pair of starts this season, allowing just three earned runs (eight overall) in 9.0 innings of work for a 3.38 ERA 
  • Monmouth leads the all-time series 13-8, and have won four straight 
  • The last time the Retrievers faced the Hawks was in a matchup in Cary, N.C. in 2018 in which Monmouth won 17-5
  • Prior to that, the teams last met in 2003 as rivals in the NEC.
