Men's Basketball Welcomes Hampton on Tuesday Evening

SETTING THE STAGE  
  • Former Retriever Dion Brown scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as the visiting Retrievers rallied for an 80-76 victory over the Hampton Pirates last season.
  • Marcus Banks Jr. also enjoyed a huge second half as he scored all 14 of his points in the period. Guard Marlon Short (7 rebounds) added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and guard Bryce Johnson was also in double-figures with 10 points
  • UMBC leads the all-time series with Hampton, 3-0.
  • The Pirates are coming off a 67-58 loss to Norfolk State. Hampton attempted 31 three-point field goals and made just eight attempts for a 25.8 percent clip.
  • Hampton is averaging 68.3 points per game this season under first-year head coach Ivan Thomas.
  • Noah Farrakhan and George Beale Jr. are both averaging a team-high 11.5 ppg.
  • The Pirates lone victory came against Mid-Atlantic Christian.
LAST TIME OUT
  • UMBC dropped a 69-61 decision against the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
  •  Senior guard Bryce Johnson paced three Retrievers in double digits with 15 points and was joined by graduate student forward Josh Odunowo (10 points) and senior guard Marlon Short (12 points, team-high eight rebounds).
  •  The Peacocks (1-3) connected on 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) three-point field goals in the second half to break open a tight contest for much of the contest.
  •  UMBC (3-2) held a 16-11 advantage with 8:34 left in the opening half after sophomore guard Ace Valentine scored the final five points of a 5-0 mini-run. The Retrievers still held a 20-17 advantage after Short converted a jumper in the lane at the 6:47 mark, but the visitors went on a 9-2 spurt to claim a 26-22 edge with just over two minutes left. The visitors settled for a 28-26 lead at the break.
  •  Junior forward Louie Jordan provided UMBC with their final lead, 34-33, after swishing a triple with 17:22 remaining in the game.  The Peacocks responded with nine consecutive points to take their largest lead up to that point, 42-34, with 14:39 left. Sophomore guard Armoni Ziegler stuck bookend treys during the critical stretch.
  •  Trailing by nine with just under ten minutes left, Short recorded consecutive buckets to trim the deficit to 53-48 at the eight-minute mark. However, Saint Peter's responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from junior guard Eric Morgan Jr. and senior guard Marcus Randolph to claim a 59-48 advantage with just 5:53 left.
  •  The hosts did not go away quickly, inching within 65-60 after a fast break layup by senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. with thirty-six seconds left, but the visitors converted all four of their free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
  •  UMBC made just 4-of-20 of their attempts from behind the arc in the contest and finished at 38.9 percent overall (21-of-54) from the field.
  •  Saint Peter's converted 24-of-55 (43.6 percent) field goal attempts and finished 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) from deep.
  •  The Peacocks also held a 41-29 advantage on the boards.
BOMBS AWAY
  • UMBC leads the AE with 9.83s made per game this season and are 40th in the nation.
  • The Retrievers 17 makes against Valley Forge were an America East single-game high.
  • The Retrievers lead the league in 3-pt field goal percentage (.386).
  • Louie Jordan (2.8 pg.) and Marcus Banks Jr. (2.6 pg.) are 4th and 5th respectively in 3s per game
  • Jordan is shooting a league-high 61 percent (14-of-23) from deep.
 SHARING IS CARING
  • UMBC dished an America East high 31 assists in the win versus Valley Forge. It was their highest output since they handed out 29 vs. Coppin St. on 11/30/2022.
  • It was also the most in the conference since Maine and Bryant recorded 32 during the 2022-23 season.
  • The Retrievers are 2nd in the league in the category at 16.8 pg and are 39th in the nation.
  • Sophomore guard Ace Valentine recorded a career-best 11 helpers in the victory against Valley Forge.
 A PROGRAM ON THR RISE
  • UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 148-111 (.614) over the past eight seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program-high.
  • UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
  • Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (formerly the UMBC Event Center) officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
  • The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
 COACH FERRY
  • Jim Ferry is in his 23rd season as a collegiate head coach and his third at UMBC.
  • Ferry led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22.
  • Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, Ferry served in 2020-21 as the interim head coach at Penn State. He led the Nittany Lions to an 11-14 overall mark and a
  • 7-12 Big Ten record that included wins over NCAA Tournament
  • teams No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech , Rutgers, and Maryland (twice).
  • Ferry spent 10 seasons as head coach at LIU Brooklyn, guiding the program to unprecedented levels of success. He led the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference regular-season titles and tournament championships in 2011 and 2012, including their first NCAA Championship appearance in 14 years.

 SEVEN TALENTED NEWCOMERS ENTER THE FOLD
UMBC Head Men's Basketball Coach Jim Ferry has announced the addition of seven newcomers to round out the Retrievers' 2024-2025 roster.
 
Graduate student Josh Odunowo (Laurel, Md./Perkiomen School/Columbia University), junior Chaydon Stone (Macon, Ga./Jones County/New Mexico State Junior College), sophomore Daylon Dickerson (Kaufman, Tex./Kaufman/McLennan Community College), junior Louie Jordan (Leicester, England/Charwood College/Weber State), freshman Tim Eze (Kleinburg, Ontario/Bill Crothers Prep), freshman Jake Stout (Catonsville, Md./Boys Latin), and freshman Torin Bosch (Chandler, Ariz./Perkiomen School (Pa.)) will all wear the black and gold this upcoming season.
 
"I'm really excited about this group and the skill level that every student-athlete will bring to the program," Ferry said. "It's a class of very versatile players who are all true competitors. They have blended in great with our returners and will be able to fill in many of our needs."

At Columbia: Made 56 starts throughout his career at Columbia…Led the Ivy League with a 61.1 field goal percentage in 2023-2024…Finished tied for eighth in the conference and paced the Lions with 19 blocks. High School: A 2020 graduate of Perkiomen School …Three-time letter winner with the Panthers … First Team All-County in 2019 and 2020…Helped the Panthers become Regional Champions in 2020 … Perkiomen School basketball MVP during his post-grad year…Team captain 2019-2020.
 
Chaydon Stone, G, 6-3, 180
At New Mexico Junior College: Averaged 12.6 points per game in just 17.5 minutes per game…Shot 35.3 percent (54-of-153) from behind the arc and 79.1 percent (72-of-91) from the free throw line…Also added 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Helped lead the squad to the Region V Semifinals last season and was named to the Region V All-Tournament Team…Scored 34 points in a double-overtime game against Clarendon and splashed seven treys in the contest. High School: Averaged 19.2 points at Jones County as a senior and was named First Team All-County.
 
Daylon Dickerson, F, 6-6, 200
At McLennan Community College: Produced 16.8 points on 55.6 percent shooting in 2023-24. Also grabbed 9.0 rebounds and added 2.2 assists over 30 games played...Named to the North Texas All-Region and All-Conference squads. High School: Averaged 18.6 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 3.2 steals and 2.5 blocks…Two-Time First-Team All-District selection…District MVP… Two-time All-Region selection… Two-time All-State selection…McDonald's High School All-American Nominee.
 
Louie Jordan, F, 6-9, 215
At Weber State: Played two seasons at Weber State and appeared in 40 career games… Knocked down 17 career 3-pointers… Earned Big Sky Academic All-Conference honors in Professional Sales…Made three 3-pointers in wins over Colgate, Navajo Tech, and Park Gilbert… High School: Played for Charnwood College in Leicester for three seasons…Named D2 MVP…Participated in the Hoopsfix All Star game and scored 22pts 7/8 fg 5-6 3's.

High School: Averaged 21.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game as a senior…Shot .468 from the floor and .769 from the foul line…Enjoyed a monster game with 38 points and four blocks against United Scholastic Academy…Named to the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association First Team All-State team and was the league's leading scorer…Helped lead the squad to the OSBA Quarterfinals.
