SETTING THE STAGEÂ Â
- UMBC opened their 57th season against Penn State York on November 4th. This is the 39th season of DI hoops for the Black and Gold.
- In season openers, UMBC now holds a 16-22 mark in DI play
- The Dawgs dropped a 66-60 decision last season in Jersey City, NJ. Former Retriever Dion Brown scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Dawgs.
- UMBC trails 4-0 in the all-time series. Three of the four games have been in New Jersey.
- The Peacocks have played a difficult schedule with three difficult road games at Seton Hall, UMass Lowell and #24 Rutgers.
BOMBS AWAY
- UMBC leads the AE with 11.3s made per game this season and are 40th in the nation.
- The Retrievers 17 makes against Valley Forge were an America East single-game high.
- The Retrievers are second in the league in 3-pt field goal percentage (.425).
- Marcus Banks Jr. leads the league with 3.3 treys per game and Louie Jordan ranks 5th (3.0 pg.)
- Louie Jordan is also 2nd in 3-pt percentage (63.2) and is 21st in the nation.
LAST TIME OUT
- BALTIMORE - Senior guard Bryce Johnson ignited the offense with a team-high 18 points as the UMBC men's basketball team eased their way to a 92-67 win against Baltimore rival Coppin State on Thursday night at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
- Johnson went for 5-of-11 from the floor, with a solid 3-for-5 effort on threes, alongside four rebounds. Senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half and added three steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Junior Louie Jordan scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and a perfect 2-for-2 record behind the arc. Senior guard Devan Sapp was the fourth Retriever in double-digits with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
- Â Sophomore point guard Ace Valentine dished a career-high 11 assists alongside seven points and three steals in 22 minutes off the bench. "I thought Ace was fantastic tonight, and some of his passes were spectacular," Ferry stated. "When Ace comes in off the bench like that, you could tell he only cares about what's good for the team, and that's a great step for us. His defense in the first half was outstanding as well."
- UMBC (3-1) led 43-27 at the break after dominating the defensive end with seven steals, a block, and forced 12 turnovers. The defensive pressure allowed them to record 18 points off Coppin's turnovers.
- Â Coppin inched within 51-39 after a bucket by Jonathan Dunn with 16:12 left in the contest, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. The hosts answered with a 20-8 burst to widen their lead to 71-47 at 8:56. Banks Jr., Johnson, and Sapp connected on treys during the stretch.
- Â UMBC shot a blistering 58.6 percent overall (34-58) and swished 10-of-19 attempts (52.6 percent) from behind the arc.
- Â Coppin State (0-5) connected on 26-of-55 (47.3 percent) field goal attempts but were just 3-for-12 from the 3-point stripe and made only 12-of-20 (60 percent) of their free throws.
- Â Dunn paced the visitors with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting.Â

SHARING IS CARING
- UMBC dished an America East high 31 assists in the win versus Valley Forge. It was their highest output since they handed out 29 vs. Coppin St. on 11/30/2022.
- It was also the most in the conference since Maine and Bryant recorded 32 during the 2022-23 season.
- The Retrievers are 2nd in the league in the category at 18.8 pg and are 39th in the nation.

A PROGRAM ON THR RISE
- UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 148-110 (.614) over the past eight seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program-high.
- UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
- Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena (formerly the UMBC Event Center) officially opened on Feb. 3, 2018, as the UMBC men's basketball team hosted the Vermont Catamounts before a capacity crowd of 4,753. Both the men's and women's basketball teams played their February and March games in the new facility, which included three post-season victories.
- The on-campus facility can accommodate nearly 6,000 patrons for commencements, concerts, featured speakers, and other events. It includes spectator facilities, such as concessions, catering, hospitality, restrooms, security and guest services.
COACH FERRY
Jim Ferry is in his 23rd season as a collegiate head coach and his third at UMBC.
Ferry led the Retrievers to consecutive 18-14 records as well as an appearance in the America East Finals in 2021-22.
Prior to his arrival in Baltimore, Ferry served in 2020-21 as the interim head coach at Penn State. He led the Nittany Lions to an 11-14 overall mark and a
7-12 Big Ten record that included wins over NCAA Tournament
teams No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech , Rutgers, and Maryland (twice).
Ferry spent 10 seasons as head coach at LIU Brooklyn, guiding the program to unprecedented levels of success. He led the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference regular-season titles and tournament championships in 2011 and 2012, including their first NCAA Championship appearance in 14 years.

At New Mexico Junior College: Averaged 12.6 points per game in just 17.5 minutes per game…Shot 35.3 percent (54-of-153) from behind the arc and 79.1 percent (72-of-91) from the free throw line…Also added 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Helped lead the squad to the Region V Semifinals last season and was named to the Region V All-Tournament Team…Scored 34 points in a double-overtime game against Clarendon and splashed seven treys in the contest. High School: Averaged 19.2 points at Jones County as a senior and was named First Team All-County.
