Ashley Gutshall set a meet record in the 50 free and
Bruna de Padua won the 500 free as the UMBC Swimming & Diving team completed the first day of the Thomas Murphy Invitational at Loyola Maryland on Friday.
Gutshall set meet record with a time of 23.21 in the morning prelims, and won (in a tie) in the evening finals in a time of 23.27. de Padua shaved nearly four seconds off her prelim time as she finished strong to win in 4:54.63
The men's 800 free relay team of
Marko Kovacic,
Boris Milev,
Andrew McEachern and
Nick Bracall took second.
Oliver Gassmann was just out-touched by a pair of Loyola swimmers at the wall to take third in the 50 free in a time of 20.64, and Milev and
Bode Neale finished fourth and fifth.
Max Trias finished with the sixth best time in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.85, and
James Tao,
J.J. Chapman finished right behind him in their heat.
Day 2 of the meet begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
