2023 UMBC Men's Soccer Schedule
BALTIMORE - Head Men's Soccer Coach
Anthony Adams announced the squad's 2023 fall schedule today, which features ten home matches at Retriever Soccer Park.
Adams will make his debut as the bench boss on Thursday, Aug. 24 when UMBC takes on George Mason in Fairfax, Va. It will be the first meeting between the Retrievers and Patriots since 2015 and the first time UMBC has opened as a true road team since 1998, when they won at Delaware, 2-1.
The Retrievers open the home slate and kick off a four-game homestand on Monday, Aug. 28 when they welcome Old Dominion. The two schools have not competed since a NCAA Championships Second Round game in 2012 and the Monarchs will make their first-ever visit to Hilltop Circle.
A huge "Move-In Weekend" student crowd is expected at RSP and the start time of the game will be 7:30 p.m. All of the other nine home games will get underway at 7:00 p.m.
"The annual Move-In game is always a fantastic night as the University welcomes the new freshmen to campus," said Adams. "They get to see the awesome school spirit first hand at Retriever Soccer Park and we're fortunate to have a great opponent in Old Dominion."
UMBC will co-host their annual tournament with Navy on Friday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 3 when Liberty and Howard visit Retriever Soccer Park. The Retrievers conclude the homestand with another Friday evening contest, as the Fordham Rams take to the Bermuda grass surface on Sept. 8.
After a game at Hofstra on Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Retrievers host a pair of non-conference contests when they entertain first-time opponent Cornell on Saturday, Sept. 16 and American on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
"During my time here this is one of the more challenging non-conference schedules with some Top 25 RPI opponents and conference champions," said Adams. "We're excited to play the schedule and have some great matchups in front of our fans and Lot 17 (supporters group) at Retriever Soccer Park this fall."
UMBC opens America East Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they visit UAlbany. They kick off home competition in the league when Bryant makes its first visit as an America East member the following Saturday (Sept. 30).
The Retrievers host Patriot League champion Navy in the final non-conference contest on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The two squads have battled in 11 of the last 12 fall campaigns.
UMBC plays at UMass Lowell on Saturday, Oct. 7, then returns to RSP on Homecoming Weekend to play UNH, a program that has reached the NCAA Tournament for six consecutive seasons.
The Retrievers play back-to-back on the road for the lone time in 2023 when they face 2022 College Cup participant Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 21, then take on NJIT in Newark, N.J. on Friday, Oct. 27.
UMBC wraps up the regular season on Halloween, facing rival Binghamton on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
"The America East continues to prove itself as a top Men's Soccer Conference producing multiple NCAA bids and Top 20 teams. It will be very competitive as always," said Adams.
The last time a UMBC head men's soccer coach debuted was in the late summer of 1991, when Pete Caringi, Jr.'s first Retriever squad defeated Shepherd, 7-2.
Twenty-one players and nine starters are expected to return to the pitch for Adams and assistant coaches
Pete Caringi III,
Brian Rowland and
Sam DeBone in 2023, including:
- Graduate student defender Jordan Ehart, who is seeking to become the first Retriever to compete in a "sixth-year"… he debuted in the fall of 2018, but did not play due to injury in 2021
- 2022 America East Striker of the Year, senior Taylor Calheira... he is UMBC's first major AE Award Winner since 2015 and finished the season tied for 11th nationally with 29 points
- AE Second Teamers – senior forward Alec Wroblewski and senior back Hans Nesheim – and All-Rookie Team back Lasse Kelp
"Our expectation is to compete every day and be playing our best soccer in November. Our players and staff are really looking forward to the season," said Adams.
