Baseball Set To Host Maryland and Coppin State This Week

The UMBC Baseball team wraps up its six-game home stand by welcoming local rivals Maryland (25-15, 8-4 Big Ten) and Coppin State (13-25, 6-12 NEC) to Alumni Field this week.

The Retrievers and Terps will square off on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. Wednesday matchup between UMBC and CSU.

Both games will be live streamed for free on the America East Digital Network.

Dawg Bytes:
  • UMBC is on a four game winning streak and moved into second place in the America East after a three-game sweep of UMass Lowell this past weekend.
  • The Retrievers are second in the America East with 254 runs scored and are third in the America East in batting (.293).
  • Right hander Luke Johnson leads the league with a 2.63 ERA and opposing batters are hitting just .200 against the right hander. He's also second in the conference- with 64 punch outs.
  • Right hander Nick Remy is fifth in the conference with a .242 opposing batting average.
  • Catcher Tony Krueger is sixth in the league in batting (.363).
  • First baseman Leewood Molessa ranks second on the circuit in RBI (47) and home runs (13). He's also fourth in slugging percentage (.687) and second in hits (50).

Scouting Maryland:
  • The Terrapins come into this midweek game with a .295 team batting average, which is sixth in the Big Ten.
  • With 337 runs, the Terps lead the Big Ten.
  • Maryland ranks 12 in team ERA (6.03) and fourth in fielding percentage (.974).
  • Senior infielder Nick Larusso is leading the terrapins with a .367 batting average. This ranks him ninth in Big Ten play.
  • Catcher Luke Shliger is 3rd in the Big Ten with .505 OB% and leads his team with 39 BB. He also leads the league with 59 runs scored.
  • Infielder Matt Shaw leads his team in stolen bases as he's swiped 14-of-15 bags.

Scouting Coppin State:
  • The Eagles come into this midweek game with a .257 team batting average, which is seventh in the NEC.
  • With 207 runs, the Eagles rank 7th in the NEC
  • Coppin State ranks fifth in team ERA (6.55) and fourth in fielding percentage (.968).
  • Junior outfielder Jordan Hamberg is leading the eagles with a .301 batting average. This ranks him 37th in NEC play.
  • Jordan Hamberg & Brett Curran have both hit 3 triples in NEC play and ranks 4th & 5th in the league.
  • Junior Outfielder Brody Black his team in stolen bases as he's swiped 9-of-12 bags.
  • Coppin State has 5 players who have recorded 30 hits this season.
  • Right hander Jason Savacool is second in the league with 60.0 innings pitched and is seventh with 59 strikeouts.
