Men's Lacrosse Heads to Delaware to Take on Blue Hens on Tuesday Evening

The Retrievers' top defense will be tested by a high-powered UD squad.

BALTIMORE - The UMBC men's lacrosse (4-0) team will play for the second time in 55 hours when they take on the Delaware Blue Hens (3-2) at Delaware Stadium on Tuesday, March 7. The opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and a broadcast is available via FloSports ($).

RETRIEVER NOTES
  • The UMBC men's lacrosse team put on another defensive clinic on Sunday, throttling a strong Towson offense as the Retrievers ran their record to 4-0 with an 8-4 triumph before 1,428 fans at UMBC Stadium.
  • The 4-0 start is the Retrievers' first since winning the first five games of the 1992 season. Moreover, the victory was the 400th in the 55th season of intercollegiate competition (400-355).
  • The Retrievers are receiving votes in both the USILA Coaches' Poll (13 votes, 25th overall) and Inside Lacrosse Media poll as of March 6.
  • Entering the game, the Retrievers' scoring defense was the top-ranked unit in NCAA Division I lacrosse, and UMBC lowered that mark to 5.25 with its second consecutive effort allowing four goals.
  • The America East Conference named UMBC junior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue the Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on March 6. Tingue allowed only four goals and made eight saves in back-to-back wins over St. Bonaventure (13-4) and Towson (8-4).  He leads the nation with a miniscule GAA of 4.82, playing all but 3:16 this season. Tingue has saved 60 percent or more shots in all four games in 2023 and has a currently save percentage of 65.5.
  • UMBC has outscored its foes, 49-21, through four games to date.
  • Junior attackman Mateo Brown has a team-high 11 tallies on the season. He entered the season with one goal scored in four games played.
  • Junior attackman Allen Hockenberry added his name to the list of first-time three-goal scorers. He tallied three goals and two assists versus St. Bonaventure. He has five goals and a team-best five assists through four games after seeing action in two career contests prior to 2023.
  • In addition to Brown notching his first career multiple-goal game, sophomore midfielder Josh Tang also posted his first career three-goal effort in the 16-6 win over Mount St. Mary's.
  • Grad student Brett Baucia, has five goals to date and is one point shy of 50 (28-21-49). His 16-game scoring streak came to an end in the win over Towson.
  • Fifth-year midfielder Taylor Bohahan, who served as a co-captain in 2022, will reprise his role in 2023, along with senior defender Ricky Fedorchak and juniors Kyle Hoff (SSDM) and Brian Tregoning (A).
  • After competing on the grass at Retriever Soccer Park in 2022, UMBC returns to the turf at UMBC Stadium this spring. UMBC Stadium now features a new press box, a fan amenities building and new walking bridge to the facility.
A GLANCE AT THE BLUE HENS
  • Delaware (3-2) got off to a 3-0 start and moved into the nation's top 20, but have dropped home decisions to Villanova, 13-12 and Michigan, 16-12 in their last two outings.
  • The game versus UMBC is UD's fourth in a row at home and the penultimate game in a five-game homestand.
  • Delaware built a 9-4 lead on Saturday vs. the Wolverines, but UM reeled off nine consecutive goals to take command. Tye Kurtz led UD with four goals.
  • Kurtz has 21 goals through five games and was the nation's fifth-leading goal scorer as of March 1.
  • UD's special teams have been excellent to date. They are 9/21 on man-up and have only allowed one goal in 13 man-down situations. The Blue Hens are winning face-offs at a 56.1 percent clip and have a clearing percentage of 90.6.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • This will be the 22nd meeting between UMBC and Delaware, but the first since 2010.
  • The Blue Hens lead the all-time series, 12-9, and have won four of the last five encounters.
  • UMBC's last win occurred in Newark in 2009 (14-9), but UD avenged that with an 11-10, triple overtime triumph.
UP NEXT
  • The Retrievers return home to face Mercer on Saturday, March 11.
