RETRIEVER NOTES
  • The Retrievers (4-3) have won three straight, taking a pair of contests versus Delaware State and one over St. Peter's last week.
  • Graduate student OF Ian Diaz saw his season-opening five-game hitting streak end in the 6-4 win over St. Peter's, but he came back with a pair of hits and three runs scored in Sunday's nightcap versus Delaware State. Diaz is hitting .478 with a robust 1.483 OPS through seven games.
  • Sophomore third sacker Matt Ryan produced a monster week in the three wins, banging out nine base hits (2 doubles, 1 triple) and driving in six runs in 14 plate appearances. His batting average is up to .357 and OPS is .991.
  • Freshman first baseman Leewood Molessa bounced back from a tough series at Charleston and banged out seven hits in 13 PA's in the 3-0 week. He is tied with Diaz for the team lead in base hits (11).
A GLANCE AT THE TERRAPINS
  • The Terps just returned from the Cambria Collegiate Classic, played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Maryland suffered tough losses to No. 4 Ole Miss (5-1), No. 7 Vanderbilt (8-7) and Hawaii (9-3).
  • Maryland rose to No. 17 nationally with an earlier win at Ole Miss (9-2, Feb. 24). Designated hitter Ian Petrutz hit his second grand slam of the season in a decisive five-run seventh inning.
  • Petrutz leads the squad with a .311 average and 1.093 OPS. He has five home runs on the campaign, one more than senior IF Nick Lorusso, who leads the squad with 16 RBI.
SERIES RECORD
  • Maryland leads the all-time series, 33-11-1 and has won 13 consecutive games. UMBC's last victory occurred in 2005, a 9-7 victory in College Park.
  • The Terps took a pair from the Retrievers in 2022, winning home games by counts of 3-2 on Feb. 23 and 13-7 on March 22. Diaz and senior OF Justin Taylor each had a pair of hits in UMBC's 11-hit attack in March.
UP NEXT
The Retrievers will play a three-game set at Mount St. Mary's on March 10 and 11. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
