Baseball Takes on St. Peter's and Delaware State in Dover on Sunday

UMBC starts a span of six straight on the road taking on the Peacocks and Hornets.

The UMBC Baseball team will play a doubleheader on Sunday, March 5 at Delaware State's Solider Field. The Retrievers will face St. Peter's at 11:00 a.m., then face the host Hornets at approximately 2:30 p.m.
 
RETRIEVER NOTES
  • Graduate student Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a grand slam and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) had four hits as the UMBC Baseball team (2-3) cruised to a 13-1 home-opener win over Delaware State on Tuesday.
  • Diaz has gotten off to a blazing start with nine hits in 18 at-bats (.500). He has scored nine runs and knocked in seven.
  • Freshman 1B Leewood Molessa produced a 3-for-4 day at the plate on Tuesday and is tied with Diaz with 7 RBI's through five games.
  • In his first appearance of the season, sophomore Jayden Shertel picked up the win in his first start of the season. Allowing just one run in 5.2 innings, while striking out three.
HORNET NOTES
  • The Hornets have dropped six out of seven to open their campaign.
  • Junior Trey Paige continued his impressive career, recording yet another multi-hit game to help Delaware State secure its first win of the season, an 8-4 win over  Longwood on Feb. 26. He is leading his team batting average with a .409 average.
  • In 2022, the Hornets posted a 25-23 mark and made their way into the title game of the MEAC Tournament. They were three outs away from its first MEAC baseball championship in 33 years, but Coppin State scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to claim its first title since 1995 with an 18-12 victory.
PEACOCK NOTES
  • The Retrievers have faced St. Peter's three times and won all three encounters. UMBC swept a three-game set in 2015, posting narrow wins of 6-5 and 7-6 on April 3 and an 11-6 victory on April 3.
  • St. Peter's has Grant Neary as their new head coach.
  • The Peacocks have dropped seven straight to start the 2023 season.
  • They pounded three home runs against Coppin State in a Feb. 19 setback (16-8).  
  • Nick Markantonatos and Tyler DeClusin are players to watch out for, leading their team with batting averages of .375 and .389 respectively.
 
UP NEXT
UMBC makes the short trip to College Park on Tuesday, March 7 to face the 18th-ranked Terrapins. The first pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
