Baseball Heads to UConn for Weekend Series

The UMBC Baseball team continues its brief break from America East play when it travels north to face traditional power UConn.

The three game series begins on Friday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. The games on Friday and Sunday will be played at UConn, while Saturday's game will be played at Dunkin' Park in Hartford (home of AA Hartford Yard Goats).

Last Time Out:
  • Freshman Eddie Sargent (Severn, Md.) picked up his first career win with five solid innings of work and Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI as the UMBC Baseball team defeated Navy, 8-1, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
  • The Retrievers improved to 11-9 (3-3 AE) and extended their winning streak to five
  • In the top of the second, Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) and Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) would hit back-to-back singles to open the frame before moving into scoring on an error.
  • Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) would drive in Ryan with a sacrifice fly to put UMBC up 1-0.
  • Ian Diaz would then single home Krueger to make it 2-0, and an error later in the inning would allow two more runs to score before Taylor would race home all the way from second on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
  • Navy would get on the board in the 4th after a pair of walks and a two-out single, but Sargent would get a strikeout to strand a pair
  • The Retrievers would answer in the top of the fifth after Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled and moved to third on a Taylor double. Both would come in to score on a Ryan two RBI single to make it 7-1.
  • Evan Selmer (Beltsville, Md.) entered to pitch the bottom of the sixth, and after a lead off walk, would strike out the side.
  • Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W.Va.) would smack a double to start the seventh, moved to third on a Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) pinch-hit single and scored on a Ryan sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-1.
Scouting UConn:
  • Graduate student Dominic Freeberger (.356)  and fellow classmate Ben Huber (.337) lead the Huskies.
  • Freeberger has recorded five home runs and 26 RBI's and Huber has four homeruns and 22 RBI's
  • LHP Garret Coe (3.14), RHP Thomas Ellison (3.60), and LHP Zach Fogell (3.75) are all 2-0.
  • The Huskies had their six game winning streak snapped against #14 Boston College, but picked up a 17-1, 7 inning, victory over Hartford on Wednesday.
  • UConn is 17-6 overall this season
