Baseball Heads to Mount St. Mary's For Saturday/Sunday Series

Both teams are .500 on the season.

The UMBC baseball team (4-4) travels to Emmitsburg, Md. for an altered three-game series with Mount St. Mary's (6-6) on Saturday and Sunday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. The two squads will play a 2 p.m. single game on Saturday and a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
 
The games will be Mount's first at home this season.
 
PROBABLE RETRIEVER SPs:
RETRIEVER NOTES 
  • UMBC saw its three-game winning streak halted with a 12-6 loss at national power Maryland on March 7.
  • Freshman 1B Leewood Molessa homered, doubled and drove in four runs against the Terps. He is batting .371 with a team-best 13 RBI.
  • Molessa doubled on a full count in the eighth inning in College Park, driving in a pair to knot the game at 6-6. But the Terps scored six times in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory.  
  • Graduate student OF Ian Diaz is hitting .444 with a robust 1.356 OPS through eight games. He has scored a team-best 14 runs.
  • Sophomore third sacker Matt Ryan produced a monster week in the three wins, banging out nine base hits (2 doubles, 1 triple) and driving in six runs in 14 plate appearances. His batting average is up to .357 and OPS is .991.
A GLANCE AT THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • The Mount is 6-6 after dropping three of four in games versus Pitt and at Stetson in Deland, Fla.
  • The Mountaineers opened the campaign with five consecutive wins, including wins over Coppin State and Towson.
  • Junior Tyler Long leads the squad with a .386 batting average, while junior catcher Efrain Correa, Jr. is hitting .364 with a team-best 10 RBI.
SERIES RECORD
  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 77-22-1.
  • UMBC has won 11 of the last 12 meetings versus the Mount.
  • Last season, UMBC swept a doubleheader with the Mount, 7-4, 17-13, on March 11.
  • Justin Taylor hit his first Retriever home run and Jayden Shertel picked up the win in relief in the nightcap.
