Baseball to Open Home Slate vs. Delaware State on Tuesday Afternoon

Eleven of UMBC's first dozen games are away from Alumni Field.

The UMBC baseball team returns to Alumni Field on Tuesday Feb. 28th for the first home game of the season when the Retrievers entertain the Delaware State Hornets. The game is slated for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.

RETRIEVER NOTES 
  • The Retrievers (1-3) come home after dropping the two out of three against defending CAA regular season champion College of Charleston.
  • UMBC defeated the Cougars, 7-3, on Friday evening. Junior pitcher Luke Johnson pitched into the sixth inning, allowing only two runs. Freshmen Joshua Rivera and Ben Craig closed the game out for the Retrievers.
  • Seniors Tony Krueger and Justin Taylor each contributed a pair of hits and two RBI in an 11-hit Retriever attack.
  • Graduate student outfielder Ian Diaz hot gotten off to a blazing start, with seven hits, seven runs scored and four doubles in 15 plate appearances.
A GLANCE AT THE HORNETS 
  • The Hornets have dropped five out of six to open their campaign.
  • They posted a 8-4 victory over Longwood in Farmville on Sunday to close out the 3-game series against the Lancers.
  • Junior IF Trey Paige continued his impressive career, recording yet another multi-hit game to help Delaware State secure the first win of the season.
  • In 2022, the Hornets posted a 25-23 mark and made their way into the title game of the MEAC Tournament. They were three outs away from its first MEAC baseball championship in 33 years, but Coppin State scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to claim its first title since 1995 with an 18-12 victory. 
SERIES RECORD
  • The Hornets and Retrievers have met 33 times prior to this weekend with the Retrievers leading the series, 22-11. UMBC swept a 3-game series to open the 2021 campaign, amassing 52 runs in the three games. The Retrievers have won seven of the last eight contests.
 
UP NEXT 
  • The Retrievers embark on a seven-game road swing, starting on Saturday, March 4, when they travel to Delaware State. UMBC faces the Hornets on March 4 and 6 and play St. Peter's on March 5 in Dover, Del.
