Men's Basketball Travels to UAlbany on Wednesday Seeking Third Straight Victory

LAST TIME OUT - UMBC GAINS SWEEP OF BRYANT AFTER 76-73 WIN

- Graduate student forward Tra'Von Fagan scored 18 points to lead four players in double-figures as the host Retrievers defeated the Bryant Bulldogs, 76-73, in a key America East Conference at the Chesapeake Employers Arena on Saturday afternoon. UMBC improved to 17-10 and 7-5 in the league and swept the season-series from the Bulldogs, who had won three straight entering the contest. The Retrievers also improved to 13-2 at home this season.
 - Fagan, who also corralled six rebounds, converted 7-of-9 field goal attempts and swished both of his tries from behind the arc. Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II scored 15 points and dished a season-high eight assists while seniors Jacob Boonyasith and Yaw Obeng-Mensah (6 rebounds) finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.
 - Bryant's (16-9, 7-5) Sherif Gross-Bullock, the leading scorer in the conference, produced an arena record 39 points as he hit 13-of-22 shots, including 7-for-11 from deep while making 6-of-9 free throws.
 
ABOUT UALBANY
- The Great Danes have lost nine straight contests after defeating UMass Lowell on January 8 in Troy, NY.
- UAlbany is last in the league in scoring (66.3 ppg.) and points against (75.4 ppg.)
- Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. is third in the league in scoring at 15.4 ppg.
- Jonathan Beagle is the favorite for AE Rookie of the Year and is netting  11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
 
SERIES HISTORY
- UMBC has won five of the last six meetings.
- UAlbany defeated the Retrievers in Baltimore, 66-54, during the 2021-22 season.
 
LAST MEETING
- UMBC hit 19-of-31 second half field goal attempts and outlasted UAlbany, 92-83, in a high-scoring America East Conference affair at "The Peake" on January 6.
- Five Retrievers scored in double figures, led by senior guard Jacob Boonyasith, who scored 14 of 21 points after halftime. Graduate student guard Colton Lawrence added 18 points, while senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 caroms.
- UAlbany's Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. led all scorers with 26 points. 
 
HOME SWEET HOME
- UMBC is 24-6 under Head Coach Jim Ferry over the past two seasons at "The Peake".
- The Retrievers are 81-26 (.757) in Baltimore over the past seven seasons.
 
DOG BITES
- UMBC picked up their program-record 10th non-conference regular-season victory versus Hartford.
- Freshman guard Dion Brown was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time on Monday, Feb. 6.
- Tra'Von Fagan averaged 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in UMBC's two wins last week versus NJIT and Bryant. He swished 14-of-19 field goal attempts for a 74 percent clip. Fagan is shooting a team-best 65 percent (43-of-66) in AE contests.
- Matteo Picarelli has made 28-of-32 free throws (88 percent) in conference games. He's also taken a team-high nine charges this season.
- UMBC is 17-4 when they shoot 40 percent or higher. The four losses all came on the road (UNC Greensboro, UMass Lowell, NJIT and Vermont).
- The Retrievers are 15-1 when they outshoot their opponent. The only defeat came at UMass Lowell.
- The Dawgs are 11-1 when they hold opponents under 70 points. The lone loss came at NJIT.
- Senior forward Yaw Obeng-Mensah is 2nd in the AE with a .568 field goal percentage  (50-of-88) in conference games.
- Obeng-Mensah drew a UMBC season-high 11 fouls at Vermont.
- UMBC is a combined 63-of-77 (82 percent) from the foul line in the final four minutes this season.
- Graduate student guard Craig Beaudion II is third in the AE with 4.6 assists per game in conference games. He's also 2nd with a 3.2 assists/turnover ratio.
 
BOMBS AWAY
- The Retrievers swished 17 triples for the 5th time in program history at UNCG (11/22/22).  UMBC attempted 37 treys, just six shy of their all-time single-game mark.
- The squad then broke the record with 21 bombs in their blowout victory over Coppin State. The Retrievers attempted 40 shots from distance in the contest.
- The 21 3s are tied for the 5th most in the country this season.
-UMBC ranks 61st in the country with 8.6 3's made per game and 77th in attempts per game at 24.1.
On the flip side, UMBC is 341 out of 352 in 3-point field goal percentage defense (38.1 percent).
 
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
- UMBC ranks 18th in the country with a 1.43 assists/turnover ratio.
- The Retrievers are 15th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (10.4).
- UMBC committed a season-low 5 miscues at Bryant.
- Starting point guard Craig Beaudion II is 25th in the country in assists/turnover ratio and is 2nd in the AE (2.73).
- UMBC is 12-5 win they win the turnover battle.
 
BENCH MOB
- UMBC's bench ranks 29th in the country with 26.6 ppg.
- Matteo Picarelli leads the charge at 10.0 ppg. along with Tra'Von Fagan (8.1) and Dion Brown (7.6).
 
A PROGRAM ON THR RISE     
- UMBC is enjoying their best stretch in program history as the Retrievers have gone a combined 139-87 (.615) over the past seven seasons. UMBC enjoyed three straight 20+ win seasons from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Their 25 victories in 2017-18 was a program high.
- UMBC became the first #16 seed to knock off a #1 seed when the Retrievers shocked Virginia, 74-54, in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
