Baltimore – The UMBC men's basketball team dropped an 89-70 decision against the Coppin State Eagles on Thursday evening at the Physical Education Complex.
Sophomore guard
Dion Brown paced the Retrievers (4-5) in scoring with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting while freshman guard
Franck Emmou and junior guard
Bryce Johnson added 11 points each.
Forward Justin Winston led the Eagles (1-7) with 37 points and 13 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Winston connected on 13-of-19 field goals, went 3-for-6 from distance, and hit 8-of-9 free throws.
The first half featured eight lead changes and UMBC took their last advantage at 27-26 after an outside jumper by Brown with 4:22 left in the stanza. However, Winston put the Eagles up for good after converting a layup on the next possession down the floor.
UMBC junior guard
Marcus Banks Jr. brought the Retrievers within 36-35 with 1:16 left in the half, but guard Zahree Harrison nailed a trey to spot the hosts a 39-35 lead at the break.
Coppin State outscored UMBC by a 11-2 margin to open the second half and grabbed a 50-37 lead at the 17:22 mark. Winston scored the first nine points of the spurt.
The Eagles, who shot 54.2 percent (32-of-59) from the floor, widened their lead to 68-48 at the 7:39 mark after a pair of free throws from Winston.
The Retrievers made one final push as they managed to trim the deficit down to 11 points on a couple of occasions. The final one coming at the 5:09 mark as Brown capped a 13-4 run with a second chance layup to make it 72-61.
The hosts answered with six straight points to put the game away at 78-61 with just 4:17 left.
The Retrievers converted 26-of-63 (41.3 percent) field goal attempts but were just 8-for-31 (25.8 percent) from behind the arc.
Coppin State scored 27 points off UMBC's 17 turnovers and outscored the Retrievers by a 44-26 margin inside the paint.
UMBC will return home on Saturday to take on Lehigh (1-6) at 1:00 p.m.
