Men's Cross Country Heads to Maine for 2023 America East Championships

The 8k race kicks off the action at 10:00 a.m.

The 2023 America East Men's Cross Country Championships take place at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, Maine on Friday, Oct. 27. The men's 8k race gets underway at 10:00 a.m.

THE 2022 CHAMPIONSHIPS: UMBC placed sixth (of nine schools), with three competitors finishing in the top 22 in the meet held at Jerusalem Mills, Md. and hosted by the Retrievers.  Junior Cameron Hindle earned All-America East honors with a 14th place finish (24:55.9). Classmate Baraka Sila and senior Jafar Hussen placed 21st and 22nd respectively. All five of UMBC's scorers from the meet return for the 2023 competition.

THE 2023 SEASON IN SUMMARY:
 
  • Mount St. Mary's Dual 5K's:  Hussen opened the 2023 cross country season brightly, as he finished second to lead the Retrievers in the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals in warm conditions on the course in Emmitsburg. His time eclipsed the mark of 15:17.20, set by Brandan McGee in 2012 and he earned America East Performer of the Week honors.
 
  • Navy Invitational: Sila paced the Retrievers, posting a 15th place finish, while shattering his time for the 4.9-race from a year ago.
 
  • Paul Short Run (Lehigh): Sila who led UMBC across the line, placing 41st overall with a time of 25:42.8 over the 8k course. Hindle produced his best finish of the season for the Retrievers, coming in two places and just 1.4 seconds behind Sila. The Retrievers finished 17th overall out of 47 teams in the College Brown Division.
 
  • IC4A': For the third consecutive meet, Sila crossed the line first for the black-and-gold. He finished in 77th place in a time of 25:12.7, thirty seconds faster than his 8k mark two weeks ago at Paul Short. Senior Mark Unger set a fast 2.9k pace and ended the race as UMBC's No. 2 finisher for the first time in his tenure. He ended up 2.7 seconds and seven spots behind Sila in 84th.
 
 
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
 
  • UMBC is seeking its third America East title. They won in 2005 and 2013, with both victories occurring at Binghamton University.
 
  • Hassan Omar is UMBC's lone medalist, male or female, at the league championships. He captured the 2015 title at Stony Brook.
