Men's Soccer Hosts Navy in 2023 Non-Conference Finale

The Retrievers and Midshipmen renew a terrific rivalry on Tuesday evening.

The UMBC men's soccer team (5-2-2) plays its final non-conference contest of the season when the Retrievers renew a terrific rivalry with the Navy Midshipmen (5-4-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

The opening kick-off commences at 7:00 p.m. and Paul Mittermeier will provide the play-by-play duties on ESPN+.

BREAKING NEWS:
 
  • UMBC (5-2-2, 1-0-1 AE) remained undefeated in America East Conference play as the Retrievers held high-powered Bryant off the scoreboard in a 0-0 draw on Saturday.
  • The scoreless draw is UMBC's first since March of 2021 when they battled Stony Brook for 110 minutes with no goals. It was the first time in a span of ten home matches that the Retrievers failed to dent the net.
  • The America East Conference is currently ranked No. 3 as a conference behind just the Pac-12 and the ACC in NCAA Men's Soccer's second RPI rating of the 2023 season. UMBC's RPI jumped up one place to No. 36 and the Retrievers are only behind Vermont (No. 11) in the robust league.
  • UMBC was ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Regional poll as of Sept. 26. Along with the Retrievers, Vermont (1), UNH (2), Bryant (3) and NJIT (9) comprised half of the poll. Cornell, a team which UMBC edged, 2-1, on Sept. 16, was ranked No. 4 in the region.
  • Senior forward Taylor Calheira leads the team with seven goals and one assist through nine games. He is three goals clear of five other players for the top spot in America East.  Calheira as tied for eighth in the country in goal scoring and in goals per contest (0.88) as of the last statistical report on September 29.  He need owne more tally to hit the 30-goal mark and enter UMBC's all-time top ten list.
  • Sophomore Emigdio Tormo Lopez (1.18 GAA) has started the last four games for UMBC and recorded his second shutout versus Bryant. He is tied for the America East lead with 3.5 saves per match.
A GLANCE AT THE MIDSHIPMEN             
  • Navy, the defending Patriot League champions, got off to a 2-4-0 start, but is 3-0-1 since and has a 2-0-1 conference record. Navy is 1-2-1 away from Annapolis in 2023.
  • The Mids have recorded three consecutive shutouts, blanking Marist and Bucknell, 1-0, and whitewashing Lehigh, 2-0, on Saturday. Andrew Schug and David Jackson scored Navy's goals in the home win over the Mountain Hawks.
  • Jackson leads the squad with six goals and four assists, while Schug has four goals.
  • Goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook has four shutouts, 25 saves and a 1.23 goals against average.
 
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
  • UMBC has a four-game unbeaten streak alive versus Navy, with a pair of wins and two recent draws vs. the Mids.
  • In last year's meeting in Annapolis, the Mids scored in the 20', but UMBC's Ismailcan Usta's 30-yard rocket knotted the score six minutes later as the teams played to a 1-1 draw.
  • UMBC recorded a pair of 2-0 victories versus Navy in 2017 and 2018 and the two teams played to a 2-2 draw when the series resumed in 2021.
  • Navy leads the all-time series, 19-7-6.
