Men's Soccer Continues Homestand on Friday Evening

The Retrievers welcome St. Francis Brooklyn to Retriever Soccer Park

The Retriever men's soccer team (2-0) continues its opening four-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 2 when they host the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (1-1) The contest gets underway at 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on the America East Digital Network. 
 
NOTABLE
 
UMBC received nine votes in the first United Soccer Coaches Rankings of the 2022 campaign. The nine votes is the tenth-most outside of the top 25 teams.
 
The America East Conference tabbed UMBC sophomore forward Spencer Hanks as its Offensive Player of the Week on August 29. Hanks, who missed the entire 2021 season, rehabilitating from ACL surgery, returned to the field and scored three goals and added one assist in the Retrievers' 8-2 win over Fairfield on August 26.
 
Hanks' hat trick was the first of his career and the Retrievers' first since Taylor Calheira potted three at Lehigh in September, 2021. His seven-point effort is the most since Pete Caringi III scored four goals versus Hartford in October, 2012.
 
UMBC's offensive explosion versus Fairfield marks the first eight-goal effort in the program's NCAA Division I history and the sixth-most scores since 1986. The last seven-goal effort occurred versus Hartford in 2012.  

In Monday's 2-0 blanking of Lehigh, UMBC senior goalkeeper Quantrell Jones only had to make one save to record his 12th career shutout, tying him with Dan Louisignau (2010-11) for eighth on the Retrievers' all-time list.

UMBC is 2-0 for the first time since 2018.·       Senior midfielder Ryan Becher is the lone Retriever to record goals in each of the first two games. He now has 39 (14g, 11a) career points.
 
Junior Alek Wroblewski scored 27 seconds into the second half – his first goal in a Retriever uniform. He had scored six goals during the 2021 spring and fall campaigns at Mount St. Mary's.
 
Head Coach Pete Caringi, Jr. enters his 32nd season at the helm of the Retrievers. The 2014 NSCAA National Coach of the Year now has posted a record of 312-198-79 in his tenure on Hilltop Circle. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach Anthony Adams, UMBC, '97, who has spent 25 previous years on the sidelines with Coach Caringi, after four years (1992-95) competing under the Retriever mentors. Pete Caringi III enters year No. 9 on the staff and volunteer assistant coach Sam DeBone is beginning his 24th year in his role.  

A GLANCE AT THE TERRIERS       

St. Francis opened the campaign with a tough 2-0 loss at UMass Lowell, but opened the home slate with a rousing 3-0 win over La Salle.
 
Caleb Danquah, Michele Signorelli and Khaled Abella all scored for the Terriers versus the Explorers. Danquah's and Signorelli's goals were their first as Terriers.
 
St. Francis Brooklyn was picked second in the Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason coaches' poll. The Terriers finished with a 10-5-2 record in 2021, its most wins in a season since 2017. They reached the NEC Championship game, falling to 2022 preseason favorite LIU.
 
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
 
UMBC leads the all-time series, 6-2-3, as the teams will meet for the first time since a 3-1 Retriever win in 2013.
 
The Retrievers are 2-0-2 versus the Terriers at Retriever Soccer Park.

UMBC concludes the homestand when they welcome another Northeast Conference member – Fairleigh Dickinson – to Retriever Soccer Park on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
