Women's Soccer Heads to Virginia to Face Longwood on Sunday

The Retrievers and Lancers battled to a 0-0 double overtime draw in 2021

The UMBC women's soccer team (0-0-1) hits the road again early in the 2022 campaign when they face the Longwood Lancers (1-0-0) on Sunday, Aug. 21 in Farmville, Va. The opening kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Retrievers open the home slate versus Wagner on Thursday, Aug. 25.

NOTABLE
  • UMBC junior Meghan McKye (Toronto, Ont.) scored a game-tying goal late in the first half and senior goalkeeper Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) made seven saves, including a penalty kick rejection as the Retrievers and host George Washington played to a 1-1 draw at GW Soccer Field on Thursday, Aug. 18.
  • After GW scored on a deflection in the 26', UMCB newcomer Lola Negrete's in-swinger from the left corner found McKye, who headed it into the net from five yards away in the 42'.
  • GW was awarded a penalty kick in the 86', but McGruder moved just to her right and made a kick save. She finished the match with seven saves, including five in the final 15 minutes.
  • The goal was the second of McKye's career and her first since the notching a game-winning goal at NJIT in the spring of 2021.
  • McGruder has now made seven or more saves in five of her 11 career contests, including three of the last four.
  • Negrete and freshmen Cat Domecq, Marie Mikkelsen and Delainey Varela-Keen all appeared in the starting 11 for UMBC.
  • Head Coach Vanessa Mann enters her fifth season at the helm. She is assisted by Jen Mavis and Daniel Saucedo.

  • Longwood posted an 8-8-4 mark and 6-2-2 Big South record in 2021.
