Retrievers fall 5-4 to Stony Brook in Series Opener

Box Score Stony Brook, N.Y. – The Retrievers battle late but fall to a Stony Brook walk-off in the ninth.

Starting pitcher Jayden Shertel  (Mays Landing, N.J.) pitched into the 8th inning, getting 4 strikeouts and allowing 6 hits. Shertel held Stony Brook's offense scoreless from the 2nd inning to the 7th inning.

Matt Ryan (Bethesda, MD.) had a productive day, getting 2 hits on the day and played a role in 5 putouts from third base. 

Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, PA.) led the Retrievers offense with 3 hits on the day, one of those hits being an RBI double to score Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, MD.), who hit an RBI single to tie the game in the fifth inning.

Luke Trythall (Poolesville, MD.) hits his first homerun of the season to put the Retrievers ahead of the Seawolves in the top of the eighth.

How It Happened
  • Stony Brook's offense came alive early, gaining a 2-0 lead on the Retrievers in the first inning.
 
  • The Retrievers would respond in the third inning, as Christian Easley (Collinsville, VA.) hit a single to center field to score Matt Ryan. This would make it a 2-1 ballgame and cut the Seawolves lead in half.
 
  • In the fifth inning, The Retrievers tied it up with a 2 out RBI single from Myles Nicholson that would send home Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.).
 
  • In the top of the eighth, Luke Trythall would extend that lead, hitting a solo homerun for his first homer of the season to put the Retrievers up 3-2 over the Seawolves.
 
  • Stony Brook hits a 2 run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead.
 
  • In the ninth inning with 2 outs and a full count, Ian Diaz hits an RBI double to right field to score Myles Nicholson from second. This tied the game at 4 and sent the game into the bottom of the ninth.
 
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, Stony Brook's Stanton Leuthner hit a walk off homerun on the opening pitch.
