Retriever Baseball Hosts NJIT in three-game series at Alumni Field

UMBC took the final game of a three game series last month

The UMBC baseball team will play its final six America East Conference games of the season at Alumni Field, starting with a weekend set versus NJIT on May 13-15. The Retrievers welcome the Highlanders for single games on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). The games will be broadcast on the America East digital network.
 
 
A Glance at the Retrievers
 
  • UMBC currently holds a record of 19-27 overall, going 8-16 in the America East Conference. The Retrievers were swept at Stony Brook last weekend, with two of the setbacks of the one-run variety.
 
  • Most recently, the Retrievers defeated Eastern Shore, 8-4, in Princess Anne on Wednesday. Matt Ryan, Connor Kelly and Michael Cilio all went deep in the contest and Joe Pucek fanned a dozen in 7.1 innings to earn the win.
 
  • Graduate student Myles Nicholson just earned UMBC's Dr. Charles R. Brown Award, as the male athlete of the year. He is having a stellar season, leading the team in batting average (.389), hits (72), RBI's (29), doubles (11), OPS (1.012) and slugging percentage (.541).
 
  • Junior catcher Tony Krueger (.301) was named the team's Unsung Hero and sophomore P/1B Luke Johnson (3-2, 3.88 ERA, 62K's/62.2 IP,.260 BA) earned Most Improved Player accolades. Johnson is second in America East in earned run average.
 
A Look At The Highlanders and the All-Time Series
 
  • NJIT enters the weekend with a 13-11 mark in Division B of the America East Conference standings and the Highlanders are 21-21 overall. NJIT just took two of three from Binghamton last weekend.  
 
  • The Highlanders possess the top pitching staff in America East with a 5.51 earned run average.
 
  • David Marcano leads NJIT with a .333 batting average, while pitcher Ryan Fischer leads the conference with seven victories (7-2) and is third with a 3.89 earned run average.
 
  • The Highlanders took two of three from UMBC from April 15-17. The Retrievers ended the series with an 11-6 victory in Union, N.J. Michael Cilio hit a grand slam to spark the UMBC effort. NJIT won all eight decisions versus UMBC in 2021. UMBC had won three prior meetings, dating back to 2009.
 
UMBC plays at Delaware on Tuesday before concluding the regular season at home versus Binghamton over the weekend.
