Strong Offense Leads to Road Win In Final Game of Series Against Binghamton

Box Score Vestal, N.Y.-- A strong Retrievers offense leads to a 12-8 road win in final game of weekend series at Binghamton.

Sophomore Pitcher Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) pitched the opening 6 innings, earning 5 strikeouts and only allowing one run to score. Senior Colton Bare (Sharpsburg, Md.)  comes in as relief in the 7th, only allowing 1 run to score.

Junior Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) got 3 hits in 5 at bats to get his second homerun on the weekend, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs.

Junior Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) also had a productive day, going 4 for 4 on the day, with one RBI and reaching home once himself. Sophomore first baseman Luke Trythall (Poolesville, Md.) also batted 4 for 4 on the day, hitting two doubles, earning 2 RBIs and reaching home twice. Freshman Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) also had an impressive offensive outing, earning 3 RBIs on 2 hits in 3 at bats.

How It Happened

  • After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, the Retrievers quickly put up 3 runs in the second via Matt Ryan batting in two runs on a double to center field, and Luke Trythall advancing home on a wild pitch.

  • In the third inning, Justin Taylor doubled down the left field line to score Senior Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) and soon made his way home on a sac fly from Trythall, extending the UMBC lead to 5-0.

  • The fifth inning would see UMBC add another 3 runs to their lead. Trythall would bat in senior Logan Doran (Greensville, S.C.) via an RBI double to center, before being batted in on an RBI single from Matt Ryan. Matt Ryan would find himself advancing home after a passed ball gave him the scoring opportunity. Binghamton would respond with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it an 8-1 game.

  • Tony Krueger, batting 4 for 4 on the day, bats in Justin Taylor on an RBI single to right field to make it a 9-1 ball game.

  • In the eighth inning, junior Michael Cilio (Chester, N.J.) singles through the left side to bat in sophomore Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.), followed immediately by Justin Taylor hitting a two run homer to make it a 12-1 lead for the Retrievers.

  • The Bearcats put up a run in the bottom of the eighth and 5 in the bottom of the 9th, but were stopped before they could finish the rally, making the final score 12-7.
