Halczuk Records 200th Career Draw Control, Women’s Lacrosse Falls 16-8 at Vermont

UMBC women’s lacrosse suffered a 16-8 setback at Vermont on Saturday afternoon.

Burlington, Vt.-- UMBC women's lacrosse suffered a 16-8 setback at Vermont on Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers battled back to tie the game at halftime, but got outscored 11-3 in the second half. Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) recorded her 200th career draw in the contest.

The Retrievers fall to 7-6, 1-2 AE while the Catamounts improve to 9-3, 2-2 AE on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Catamounts got out to a quick 3-0 lead, holding the Retrievers scoreless over the first seven minutes.
  • UMBC finally got on the board with an Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) free position shot.
  • Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) cut the deficit to two with a goal with five minutes left in the quarter, but it was the Catamounts who took a 5-2 lead after one.
  • Weedon would take over the second quarter. She scored the only three goals of the period as UMBC held the Catamounts scoreless to tie it 5-5 at the half.
  • However, Vermont would clamp down on defense, holding the Retrievers scoreless in the third to take a 13-5 lead into the fourth.
  • UMBC would get a pair of goals from Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) and a goal from Megan Cleverly (Middletown, Md./Middletown) in the fourth, as UMBC fell 16-8.

NOTABLE:
  • Halczuk recorded nine draw controls to surpass the 200 career draws mark. She becomes just the second Retriever to ever hit the 200 mark.
  • Weedon had four goals in the loss with Bockstie adding a pair.

UMBC will return to action next Saturday, April 16 against UAlbany. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
