Women’s Lacrosse Battles, Falls 13-9 Against UAlbany on Saturday

UMBC women’s lacrosse dropped their third straight game, 13-9 to the league leading Great Danes on Saturday afternoon.

BALTIMORE– UMBC women's lacrosse dropped their third straight game, 13-9 to the league leading Great Danes on Saturday afternoon. Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) led the way with five goals.

The Retrievers battled back to tie the contest early in the third quarter, but the Great Danes scored six of the last eight goals of the game to defeat the Retrievers.

UMBC falls to 7-7, 1-3 AE while UAlbany improves to 6-6, 4-0 AE on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Retrievers got the scoring started with the first two goals of the game. Bockstie scored an unassisted goal just over a minute in, then took a feed from Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) three minutes later to give UMBC a 2-0 lead.
  • However, the Great Danes would rip off three unanswered goals to end the first with a 3-2 lead.
  • UAlbany would extend that scoring run to 7-0 after scoring five goals in a seven minute span to open the second.
  • UMBC would have the answer with three of their own to end the half. Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) and Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) had unassisted tallies with Bockstie netting a free position goal to make it 7-5 at halftime.
  • Bockstie and Gerow would score to open the third to tie the game at 7-7 early on.
  • After the Great Danes took a 10-7 lead, Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) ended the quarter with a goal to cut the deficit to 10-8.
  • Bockstie opened the quarter with a behind the back goal off a pass from Megan Cleverly (Middletown, Md./Middletown) to make it a 10-9 game.
  • However, UAlbany would score the last three goals of the game to defeat the Retrievers, 13-9.

NOTABLE:
  • Bockstie led all scorers with five goals. She moves into fourth all-time in career points with 70, and third for the single-season goals record with 56.
