Baseball Travels to New Jersey for a Weekend Series with NJIT

The weekend games will be played at Kean University in Union, N.J.

The UMBC baseball team (14-18, 5-7 America East) heads back out on the road in America East Conference play this weekend, as they will face NJIT at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. Friday, Saturday and Sunday game times are 6:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively at Jim Hynes '63 Baseball Stadium.

A Glance at the Retrievers
  • UMBC split a pair of non-conference home games during the week, falling, 10-2, to Georgetown on Tuesday and routing Maryland Eastern Shore, 19-1, the following day.

  • Sophomore shortstop Drew Roberts led the barrage versus the Hawks with six RBI. Classmate Joe Pucek struck out nine batters over seven innings to earn the win.

  • In America East play last weekend, UMBC rallied from a 6-2 deficit, scoring seven unanswered runs to knock off UMass Lowell, 9-6, in ten innings at LaLacheur Park on Sunday. UMBC's comeback salvaged a tough weekend, as the Retrievers dropped two one-run affairs to UML on Friday and Saturday.

  • Graduate student second baseman Nicholson is 7th in the nation in batting average with a .427 mark. He has 18 multi-hit games and seven in his last 12 plate appearances. Nicholson has also stolen 21 bases, good for a tie for 12th nationally.

  • Roberts raised his batting average to .318 and he is one behind Nicholson with 25 RBI's.

A Look At The Highlanders and the All-Time Series

  • NJIT enters the weekend with an 8-4 mark in Division B of the America East Conference standings and the Highlanders are 14-13 overall. NJIT edged Rider, 4-3, on Tuesday after dropping two of three at Maine over the weekend. The Highlanders swept UAlbany and took two of three from UML earlier in the campaign.

  • The Highlanders possess the top pitching staff in the America East to date, They own the only sub-6.00 ERA in the league (5.92) and have an America East best seven saves.

  • Offensively, graduate student shortstop David Marcano is America East's fourth-leading hitter at .374 with 12 extra-base hits. His twin brother, graduate student second baseman Julio Marcano has scored 30 runs, third-best in the league and has a dozen doubles.

  • The Highlanders won all eight decisions versus UMBC in 2021. UMBC had won three prior meetings, dating back to 2009.
