West Hartford, Conn. – The UMBC (9-12, 2-2 America East) baseball team erupted for 13 runs in the first three innings and went on to defeat host Hartford, 17-5, in the opener of a three-game America East series.
Senior outfielder
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore shortstop
Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) paced the 13-hit UMBC attack with three hits apiece. Diaz scored four times and drove in a pair of runs, while Roberts crossed the plate in each of his first three at-bats.
Junior catcher
Tony Krueger (Appleton, Wisc.) drove in three runs, while junior first baseman Luke Trythrall (Poolesville, Md.) and outfielder
Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) collected two RBI's each.
Sophomore starter
Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) went the first four innings, allowing three earned runs. Freshman reliever
Nick Remy (Atkinson, N.H.) kept Hartford at bay, matching Johnson's four innings of work, permitting two earned runs and fanning four Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- T1 – UMBC scored three times, as Trythall and Krueger drove in runs with singles, and the Retriever catcher's occurred with two outs.
- T2 – The Retrievers added five runs, as Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) drove in a pair with a single up the middle and Taylor plated a pair with a double down the left field line.
- T3 – UMBC added five additional runs, as Krueger's two-out double to right center scored a pair.
- The Retrievers tacked on single runs in the fourth and seventh innings and two more in the ninth.
The two teams continue the series on Saturday with a single game at noon.
