Baseball’s Bats Keep Booming at Hartford

Retrievers follow up their 17-run effort Friday with a 16-spot on Saturday

West Hartford, Conn. - UMBC (10-12, 3-2 America East) got out to an early lead from the start with a lead off home run from senior outfielder Christian Easley (Collinsville, Va.), setting the tone for their 16-9 victory over Hartford. 

Grad student Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) led the Retrievers offensively with four hits including a home run, three RBIs, and three stolen bases. After Nicholson's third inning home run,  senior  infielder Logan Doran (Greenville, S.C.) stepped up with two runners on base to hit a 3-run homer of his own.

Easley, senior outfielder Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.), and freshman Infielder Matt Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) each had a pair of hits as well, with Easley and Ryan driving in two runs apiece.

Freshman pitcher Jayden Shertel (Mays Landing, N.J.) earned his third win of the season, pitching 6 innings with three earned runs allowed. 

How It Happened

  • T1 - Easley hit a solo homerun as the lead off batter.
  • T2 - A two-run inning occured when Matt Ryan tripled to right center, scoring Luke Trythall, before being driven in himself by Eric Shandler
  • T3 - Nicholson homered to left field before Doran hit a 3-run home run, also to left.  
  • T4 - Nicholson hit an RBI single to left field before Krueger and Taylor were hit by pitches with bases loaded to plate three runs.
  • T7 - Retrievers generated four runs after RBI doubles from Ryan, Easley, and Nicholson, plus an RBI single from Connor Kelly.
  • T9 - Michael Cilio hits an RBI single, followed by a sac fly from Luke Johnson to score Cilio.
UMBC and Hartford will conclude their series on Sunday at noon.
