Baseball Heads to Hartford for America East Road Series

The Retrievers and Hawks have split the last ten games in the series

The UMBC baseball team (8-12, 1-2 America East) embarks upon its first America East road trip of the season when they visit the Hartford Hawks (1-12, 1-2 AE) from March 25-27. The Friday afternoon contest begins at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday contests get underway at noon.

A Glance at the Retrievers
  • UMBC snapped a four-game slide with Sunday's 10-9 victory over UAlbany. The Retrievers had dropped the first two games of the America East series by scores of 2-1 and 11-9 and improved to 3-7 in games decided by one or two runs.
  • The Retrievers lost a 13-7 decision at No. 24 Maryland on Tuesday. (The Retrievers were listed as the home team for that game.)
  • Graduate student second sacker Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.) continues to lead UMBC in a number of offensive categories. He is ranked second in batting average (.410) and runs scored (21) and is third in the conference with 14 stolen bases.
  • Junior outfielder Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) has hit in eight of his last nine games and is batting .406 (13-of-32) in that stretch. Sophomore shortstop Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) has seven hits in his last 14 at bats with eight RBI's in the last four games.
  • UMBC is hitting .272 and averaging 6.2 runs per game (both 2nd in AE), despite a league-low six home runs. The Retrievers are third with a 6.39 ERA, but have walked a league high 122 batters.
  • Friday's expected starter, sophomore Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) is second in the league with a 2.42 ERA.
A Glance at the Hawks
  • The Hawks snapped a season-opening 11-game losing streak, by taking the finale at NJIT, 7-5, on Sunday.  Derek Tenney recorded two home runs and Alec Couture pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to lead the Hawks to victory.
  • Tenney is tenth in America East with a .333 batting average.
  • Hartford is ranked last in team batting average (.201) and ERA (8.55). They have scored 32 runs (2.5 per game) and allowed 132 (10.2).

The Series
  • UMBC took 3-of-4 versus Hartford in 2021 during a home series in April.
  • The Retrievers put up 35 runs in taking the final three games of the series.
  • UMBC took a 31-30 lead in the all-time series. The two squads have split the last ten meetings.
UMBC has a mid-week game versus Navy on Tuesday, March, 29, then hosts Maine in a weekend series from April 1-3.
