Box Score College Park, Md. – The 24th-ranked Maryland Terrapins improved to 17-3 on the season as they defeated UMBC, 13-7, at Bob Smith Stadium. The Retrievers served as the home team as the game was shifted from Baltimore to College Park due to the ongoing construction project at the UMBC Stadium Complex.
Three Retrievers (8-12) continued their recent hot hitting ways. Senior outfielder
Ian Diaz (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior outfielder
Justin Taylor (Reston, Va.) and sophomore shortstop
Drew Roberts (Matthews, N.C.) each delivered two base hits. Diaz and Roberts each drove in a run, while Taylor scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terrapins scored a run in the top of the first and added three more in the top of the second inning.
- Myles Nicholson and Ian Diaz delivered singles to start the bottom of the fourth and Nicholson would score on an RBI ground out by Luke Johnson. After two were down, four straight Retrievers reached base and Connor Kelly and Drew Roberts produced RBI base hits to cut the Retrievers' deficit to 4-3.
- The Terps would increase the lead to 9-3 with a four-run sixth and a one-run seventh.
- But UMBC halved the deficit by plating three seventh inning tallies. The Retrievers loaded the bases with one out and two runs crossed on an error by Maryland. Diaz drove in the sixth run with a two-out knock to center field.
- Maryland struck back four times in the top of the ninth inning.
- UMBC pinch hitters Jayden Shertel and Michael Cilio got base hits to start the bottom of the ninth and Shertel came around to score the Retrievers' seventh run.
