BALTIMORE– UMBC women's lacrosse put up 20 plus goals for the second consecutive game in a 25-15 win against the Colonials on Saturday afternoon.
Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) led the way with a career-high eight goals, including her 100th career point in the win.
UMBC improves to 5-3 on the year while the Colonials fall to 4-5.
Bockstie recorded her 100th career point with her goal in the first quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMBC got the scoring started in the first with Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Epsicopal) netting an unassisted goal less than two minutes in.
- Gerow added another just 13 seconds after Bockstie made it 2-1.
- The two sides went back and forth for most of the first half with neither team holding more than a two goal advantage.
- Trailing 10-9 late in the first half, UMBC ripped off three straight on goals from Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Bockstie, and Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) to take a 12-10 lead. However Robert Morris added a goal with 13 seconds left to make it 12-11 at the half.
- UMBC came out on fire in the third quarter, outscoring the Colonials 9-3. The Retrievers scored the last six goals of the quarter.
- Bockstie, Gerow and Jenna McDermott (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) each netted two on the run.
- The Retrievers would continue their run in the fourth quarter, giving up just one goal in the final 15 minutes to earn a hard fought 25-15 win on Saturday.
NOTABLE:
- UMBC scored 20 plus goals for the second straight game, and the third time this season. The Retrievers have also scored double digit goals in all but one game this season.
- Bockstie netted a career-high eight goals on Saturday, also recording her 100th career point with her first quarter goal.
- It was the most goals scored in a game since the Retrievers defeated Binghamton 27-16 last season.
UMBC will hit the road to take on Delaware on Wednesday, March 23. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
