Newark, Del.-- UMBC women's lacrosse won their third straight game with a 14-11 win against the Blue Hens on Wednesday night. The Retrievers got a big performance in net from
Lexi Roberts (Baldwin, Md./Fallston), with a career-high 20 saves.
UMBC improves to 6-3 on the year while the Blue Hens fall to 2-7.
Kolby Weedon (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) led the way with five goals with Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prep) adding four goals and two assists for six points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Delaware opened the scoring early, but a couple big saves from Lexi Roberts kept it a one goal game.
- Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) answered with a goal and then responded again to make it 2-2 early on in the first.
- Weedon scored her first of the game with under six to go to give UMBC their first lead at 3-2.
- The Blue Hens would have a chance at the buzzer, but Roberts made the save to keep it 3-3 after one.
- Then the Retriever offense got rolling. UMBC opened the second with three straight, getting two from Bockstie to make it a 6-3 lead.
- After Delaware rallied to tie it late in the half, Bockstie and Weedon ended the half with goals to give UMBC an 8-6 advantage at the break.
- Both teams struggled in the third, with Roberts making some huge saves to keep the Retrievers in front with a 10-8 lead into the fourth.
- UMBC would once again start the quarter strong with three straight before the Blue Hens rallied to make it a one goal game.
- However, the Retrievers would score three of the last four goals, including one from Dymin Gerow (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) with 1:28 to go to hold on for a 14-11 win.
NOTABLE:
- Roberts recorded a season and career-high 20 saves in the win.
- Weedon led the Retrievers with five goals with Bockstie adding four and two assists.
- Halczuk and Gerow added two goals each with Halczuk collecting seven draw controls.
UMBC will close out the non-conference slate against #20 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, March 29. Opening draw from historic Homewood Field is set for 4 p.m.
