Baseball Rallies From Four Runs Down to Lead Late, But Georgetown Prevails, 9-7

Luke Johnson cracked his first collegiate home run.

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – In their home debut of the 2022 season, the Georgetown Hoyas hit a two-out, three-run home run to defeat UMBC, 9-7, at Shirley Povich Field.

The heartbreaking loss was UMBC's fourth road setback in walk-off fashion.

The Retrievers rallied from 5-1 and 6-3 deficits and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth inning. UMBC scored 6 of 7 runs with two outs.

Graduate student Myles Nicholson (Hagerstown, Md.), sophomore Drew Roberts (Matthews,N.C.) and junior Justin Taylor each banged out two hits for UMBC. Both of Taylor's hits were doubles and sophomore Luke Johnson (Lewes, Del.) cracked his first collegiate home run.

Senior Keegan Leffler (Wilton, N.Y.) excelled on the mound, striking out six and allowing only one run in four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Retrievers opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first. Justin Taylor's (Reston, Va.) two-out double to left-center scored Nicholson, who had led off with an infield hit.
  • But the Hoyas took a 5-1 lead with a pair of runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third.
  • UMBC chipped away with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Nicholson doubled home Drew Roberts, who had reached on an infield single. Nicholson advanced to third on the throw home and scored on a balk.
  • Georgetown answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Johnson blasted his first career home run, a deep two-out, two-run drive to left field to slice the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the seventh.
  • The Retrievers knotted the game in the top of the eighth, as catcher Tony Krueger's two-out single to center field brought home Taylor. After a walk to Logan Doran (Greenville, S.C.), Roberts banged out his second hit of the day, a single to right, to score Krueger.
UMBC hosts Niagara in a four-game series, starting with a single game on Friday.
