Men’s Basketball Concludes Regular Season Against Binghamton With #AEPlayoffs Seeding on the Line

UMBC men’s basketball concludes the regular season against Binghamton on Tuesday with #AEPlayoffs seeding on the line. UMBC currently sits alone in second place at 15-13, 10-7 AE and can finish no lower than fourth.

BALTIMORE– UMBC men's basketball concludes the regular season against Binghamton on Tuesday with #AEPlayoffs seeding on the line. UMBC currently sits alone in second place at 15-13, 10-7 AE and can finish no lower than fourth. UMBC will lock up the two seed with a win against the Bearcats. The Retrievers are coming off their second straight 90-plus point performance against Maine, 93-79 on Saturday.

Scouting the Retrievers:
  • UMBC comes into the regular season finale at 15-13, 10-7 AE and in control of their own destiny for the #AEPlayoffs. UMBC will be the two seed with a win, but can finish no lower than four. The Retrievers are coming off another big offensive performance, defeating Maine 93-79 on Saturday. 
  • Keondre Kennedy (Atlanta, Ga.) was named America East Player of the Week on Monday after another big week. He leads the team at 15.1 ppg, shooting just under 50 percent from the floor and over 40 percent from three. 
  • L.J. Owens (Annapolis, Md./Severn School/William & Mary) and Darnell Rogers (Baltimore, Md./Indian Land (SC)/New Mexico JC) are also in double figures at 11.2 and 11.3 ppg respectively. Owens is shooting 44 percent from three, and recorded his 1,000th career point on Saturday.
  • Yaw Obeng-Mensah (Toronto, Ontario) leads the team on the glass, averaging 5.8 rpg.

Scouting the Bearcats:
  • Binghamton comes to Baltimore at 11-15, 8-9 AE on the year having dropped their last two contests, including a 66-62 loss to New Hampshire on Saturday. The Bearcats are also fighting for playoff seeding, part of a log jam in the middle of the pack.
  • Jacob Falko leads the Bearcats at 12.6 ppg. He also sets the table on offense, dishing out 3.2 apg. John McGriff is the only other Bearcat in double figures at 11.1 ppg.
  • Christian Hinckson leads the team on the boards grabbing 6.4 rpg.

All-Time Series:
  • This will be the 39th meeting all-time between the Retrievers and Bearcats with UMBC leading the series 20-18, including a tight 70-68 win in late January. Darnell Rogers hit a pair of free throws with a second to go to seal the victory.
  • UMBC has won nine of the last 12 in the series.

Ferry Makes History:
  • Head coach Jim Ferry has had a strong first season at the helm of the Retrievers. This past Saturday he became the first head coach in program history to win 10 conference games in their first season.
  • It is just the second time a first-year head coach will finish the season with a winning record in conference.

Among the Best:
  • UMBC sits 11th nationally in team free throw percentage at 78.7 going 381-484 from the charity stripe this season.
  • The mark is good for first in the conference.

Milestone Watch:
  • As a team, the Retrievers are on pace to have their best season from the foul line in program history. UMBC is currently at 78.7 percent from the charity stripe. The previous best was 75.5 percent in 1986-87.
Up Next:
  • UMBC will head to the #AEPlayoffs as either the 2-4 seed depending on the outcomes of Tuesday's games. The Retrievers will host the quarterfinal round on Sunday, March 6.
